“No Intimacy Until the Wedding!” – Told to the Groom by His Bride, Leading Him to Start a Secret Affair

I stepped out of my fitness class and glanced at my phone only to find seven missed calls from Mum. A wave of dread washed over me. Then I spotted her text, blunt and urgent: Ring me back! Despite it being nearly eleven, I called. Mum can fret for hours over anything and everything; its classic her. As soon as I rang, Mum was crying, begging me to come over. Something dreadful had happened: the wedding might need to be cancelled.

My sister, Charlotte, was at the centre of it all. Shes only twenty-three, talented and ambitiousan up-and-coming designer. Just a year out of university, she managed to land a job almost immediately with the company shed interned at. Charlottes life had always seemed flawless, at least until now.

Charlotte had been dating Daniel for just over a year. Hes three years older, has his own place, a good job, and is saving up for a home. Mums always approved, since hes respectful and well-spokenone of those rare sorts youd gladly welcome into the family.

They had filled out all the forms at the registry office, and the wedding was only two weeks away.

Then it all started. Someone sent Charlotte a message online! I confided as I scribbled my thoughts. She said, Weve never met, but I know who you are, and you need to hear this before your wedding Charlotte checked the womans profile; she looked to be in her fortieswhat urgent news could she possibly have?

The woman wouldnt give up, messaging Charlotte from multiple accounts. Eventually, they agreed to meet at the coffee shop near Charlottes office.

Mum was furious and slapped Charlotte, ordering her not to attend any more of those meetings. But Charlotte was stubborn. She found herself waiting at a table in the café, then suddenly a heavily pregnant woman walked in. At first, Charlotte didnt think much of it, but as the woman approached, it all made sense.

Are you Charlotte? the woman asked warmly. My name’s Emma. I’ve been seeing Daniel for over a year, and Im expecting his childa boy, due in four months.

Charlotte was floored. It didnt add upshe had been with Daniel for more than a year, their wedding was around the corner! Emma didnt argue or try to convince her. She just left, saying Charlotte could ring her if she wanted answers, and suggesting she talk to her fiancé.

So, what did Daniel say? That was the real turning point. Charlotte had decided early on they would only be physically intimate after tying the knot. Their relationship had been all hugs and gentle kisses, but nothing more. Mum had raised Charlotte single-handedly, heavily influenced by old-fashioned values and books. Its odd to think that’s how Charlotte ended upshes always been sociable, bright, and popular. But there you go.

Daniel, meanwhile, was an experienced young man. He put up with Charlottes boundaries, but in the meantime, he sought comfort elsewhere. He met Emma somewhere along the way, and made it clear from the startit was casual, no strings attached. At first, Emma agreed.

Emma had recently split from her husband. She has a child already, receives solid child support, and works. She hadnt sought anything serious with Danielshe knew the gap between them.

Daniel told Charlotte that hed take a paternity test when the baby arrived, and if the child was his, hed chip in financially. He said that he couldnt help his urges as a young, healthy manCharlottes Victorian principles had made things complicated. Mum couldnt comprehend how Emma had decided to keep the baby; no one knew where shed even give birth.

Daniel is now pleading with Charlotte. He assures her he loves only her, insists Emma was just a fleeting distractionif Charlotte had been more worldly, Emma wouldnt have come into his life. Hell support the child if its his, but has no plans to be involved beyond that. Emma wants to raise the baby herself, Daniel even offered her money for an abortion, but thats her decision now.

It leaves me questioning: Is Daniel at fault, or not? Was it his masculinity that got the better of him, the struggle too much for a young man? Or should Charlotte flee from such a fiancé? Surely, lack of intimacy isnt a justification for his betrayalCharlotte spent the night at Mums, quietly turning over each piece of the puzzle. She reread Emmas messagethen scrolled through chats with Daniel, searching for some unspoken truth. At sunrise, Charlotte sat across from me at the kitchen table, cup clutched tight in trembling hands. I waited.

After a few moments, she exhaled, voice steady but soft. I loved him, she said. But I love myself more.

By noon, Charlotte had made her decision. She called Daniel and asked him to meet her outside the park where theyd first held hands. He arrived, desperate, muttering apologies, looking for forgiveness that wouldnt come.

I cant marry someone who blames my boundaries for their choices, Charlotte said. Her words were clear, calma final line drawn. If you couldnt wait, you didnt really want me. I hope you do right by your child, but you cant be my husband.

Daniel stood silent, aching for words, but Charlotte had already started to walk away. She didnt look back.

Later that week, Mum and I watched Charlotte design a new dress in her little studio, music drifting from her phone. She was quieter than usual, but every so often, the corners of her lips would lift in a secret smile. She wasnt broken. Emma messaged againto thank Charlotte for listening, wish her luck, and say she understood.

Charlotte attended her cancelled weddings party as a guest, surrounded by friends who toasted her courage. She laughed, danced, even stood for a photo under the arch shed chosen. The whole evening felt like an affirmation: Sometimes, what looks like an ending is only the start.

When Mum worried aloud that Charlotte would be alone, Charlotte squeezed her hand and whispered, Im not alone; I chose myself. The room echoed with gentle applause.

In a world full of secrets and heartbreak, Charlottes story became the one people told friends for years. It wasnt about betrayal or blame. It was about a woman who learned her own worthand found, at last, her freedom.
