One Day, I Saw My Beaming Sister Strolling Hand-in-Hand with a Distinguished Gentleman in a Shop—Both Wearing Wedding Rings

on

I remember it as if it were yesterday, though the years have worn the edges smooth: the afternoon I spied my contented sister in the grocers, her hand entwined with that of a distinguished gentleman, both of them wearing golden wedding bands.

Emily had a twin sister named Charlotte. From their first breaths, they were each others closest companion. They shared childhood games, swapped secrets whispered beneath patchwork quilts, and received their parents scoldings as one. When adversity came calling, they stood shoulder to shoulder. Matching frocks hung in their wardrobe, and even in their youth as young ladies, they seldom deviated from this custom, cherishing their status as identical twins.

The two girls grew up modestly under the roof of their mother and father in a little town not far from Oxford. Their family was of average means, just making do for the most part. When Emily set off for college, Charlotte longed to follow but circumstances would not allow it. The disappointment weighed heavily on her, as it did upon their parents. Yet her parents scraped together what they could, paying tuition for both girls in hopes that education would open new doors. Charlotte, aware that money was tight, burned with shame whenever she received her allowance, feeling undeserving and embarrassed. Try as she might to make ends meet, her funds always ran dry before the term was through.

One chilly evening, over roast and potatoes, their grandmother had a tipple too many and began to ramble, eventually letting slip a family secret. It turned out, when their parents first learned they were to have twins, they had fleetingly considered giving the younger girl up, fearing the burden would be too great. That younger girl was Charlotte.

Upon hearing this, Charlotte felt a storm of indignation and hurt. Consolations from the family fell on deaf ears; she began to believe her sister was more cherished. In a moment of rebellion, she marched to the college office and withdrew her enrolment, handing back her papers.

Whats more, Charlotte started blaming Emily for everythingif not for her, surely no one would have dreamt of casting Charlotte aside. In her heart, she imagined herself the precious, only childthe most beloved. From then on, the easy camaraderie that bound the twins unraveled. They grew distant, each carving out a life without the other.

Emily found herself a husband, settled down, and had a son. The sisters saw nothing of each other after that, save a brief, strained visit to their parents cottage. Charlotte, always the sharper tongue now, picked at Emilys appearance, her words laced with scorn.

By chance, their paths crossed again in the heart of London, amidst the bustling shops on Oxford Street. Charlotte stood beside a well-heeled man of obvious consequenceEmily assumed he was her spouse. Emily rushed to greet her sister, but Charlotte recoiled as though confronted by a stranger. Emilys heart sank as she watched Charlotte depart in her sleek motorcar, leaving her rooted to the pavement.

The next meeting was inevitable, held under their parents roof. It began much the same, with Charlotte flinging criticismsEmilys unruly curls, her bare face, her unremarkable dress. Perhaps there was some truthEmily preferred the comfort of natural looks and homely clothes, while Charlotte, with her painted lips, coiffed hair, and tailored attire, had the means for beauty treatments and luxuries Emily found unnecessary.

Emily nursed a deep hurt from Charlottes barbs. She, too, had a family and love; she was not less in any way. Eventually, she poured her troubles into her mothers lap, sharing grievances hoarded over the years. She could not fathom how the sister she once adored could now be so cold, so changed. From whence had this bitterness grown?

Her mothers advice was quietly insistent: hold no grudge against Charlotte, let her be happy, but steer cleardo not interfere.

So it happened that Emily could only call on her parents by prior arrangement, careful not to cross paths with her twin. With only a few words, the rhythm of their family life was changed forever.
