“Six Years We’ve Celebrated New Year’s at Your Place for Free—And We’re Coming Again!” Announced My Mother-in-Law. But the Fridge Had Other Plans

For six years weve celebrated New Years at your house for freeand well get together again! declared her mother-in-law. But the fridge had other plans.

Marina, Ive sent you the list, check it carefully, Antonia Smith didnt even say hello when she rang on the morning of the twenty-ninth. And dont mix up the varieties like last time. Natasha spent two months reminding me how their table was richer than ours.

Marina opened the message and froze. Smoked salmon, marbled beef, cheeses with names she couldnt pronounce, foie gras, oysters, premium sausages. At the bottom: And get some decent champagne, not that cheap stuff. Victor will let you know which.

Six years in a row. For six New Years Eves Marina spent three days in the kitchen, while Antonia took compliments for a generous table and a big heart. The guests gathered around her mother-in-law with their toasts, while Victor was outside smoking or vanishing to see friends for five minuteswhich invariably lasted past midnight.

Why are you silent? Antonia clicked her tongue in irritation. Not happy with something?

Antonia, this is really expensive, Marina gripped the phone. Maybe this year we could go simpler? I wanted to save for the bathroomthe tiles are falling apart.

Simpler?! her voice hit a shrill note. Weve been celebrating at yours for six years for nothing, you never complained! And now, when Ive invited everyone, you kick up a fuss? Victor!

Her husband was sprawled on the sofa, glued to his phone.

Mums already promised everyone a proper spread, he didnt look up. Dont embarrass me in front of my brothers, they already think Im henpecked. Just do whats needed with no dramatics.

Marina worked as an accountant at a property management company. She was quietly savingputting aside bonuses, cutting corners where she could. In two years, shed managed a decent sum for the renovation. The bathroom was crumbling, damp smelling under the sink, but now the money was needed elsewhere. To feed twenty-five people who wouldnt even thank her.

On December thirtieth, Marina got up at six and went shopping. Butchers, fishmongers, deli. The car boot sagged under the weight of boxes. When she returned, Victor watched TV, Antonia lounged in the armchair with a cup of tea.

Finally, Antonia didnt even look up. Dont overcook the meat like last year. I had to listen to Svetlana all summer.

Marina started unloading. Victor didnt move from the sofa. When she asked for help with the heaviest box, he waved her away:

Cant you see Im busy? You can manage, youre always so strong and independent.

Marina put the box down. She looked at her husband, at her mother-in-law, at their satisfied faces. Suddenly, everything became frighteningly clear.

On the morning of the thirty-first, she woke first. Victor was snoring, spread across the bed. Antonia had gone to the salon to make herself beautiful at someone elses expense.

Marina dressed, took the keys, and began carrying the groceries back to the car. Quickly and calmly, without fuss. Smoked salmon, beef, prawns, cheeseall into the boot. When the last box was packed, she started the engine and drove to the outskirts, where there was an old childrens home.

Decorations for New Years hung in the hall.
An hour later she was back. She changed into her best dress, applied bright lipstick, and sat in the kitchen by the window. She waited.

At three, the front door burst open. Antonia entered after her salon trip, beaming, with freshly polished nails and perfect hair.

Marina, are you cooking already? she headed to the kitchen. Guests start arriving in three hours, why is nothing prepared? Whats going on?

Marina lifted her gaze slowly.

Theres nothing to cook with.

What do you mean nothing? Antonia rushed to the fridge and flung open the door.

Empty. Just a tub of margarine and a jar of mustard at the top.

Where is everything?! Wheres the caviar?! Wheres the meat?! Antonia grabbed at the fridge door. Victor, get here now!

Her husband shuffled in, sleepy. He saw the fridge and turned pale.

Marina, what the What did you do?

I took it to where itll be appreciated, she stood, smoothing her dress. To the childrens home on Oak Road. Tonight, those kids will dine like royalty. You can feed your twenty-five guests with whatever you bought yourselves. But in six years, you havent bought a thing. Not a single thing.

Silence fell, only the hum of the fridge audible.

You Antonia gripped the edge of the table. Ungrateful! I welcomed you into this family! Forgave you for not having children, for your cooking! And you do this to me?

You welcomed me as your servant, Marinas voice was free of anger or hurt, just clear and cold. Someone to cook, clean, pay, and stay silent. Ive served your relatives for six years while you took the credit. Thats over.

Marina, please! Victor stepped forward. I have twenty-five people coming! What do I tell them?

The truth, she picked up her bag from the chair, slipped in her documents, phone, car keys. Tell them your mother prefers to celebrate at others expense. Tell them you havent spent a penny on this feast in six years. Tell them you thought Id slave away for your boasting forever.

Dont speak about my mother like that! he tried to block the door, but Marina stopped him with a look.

Ill speak as I please. And you know what? Im driving to my parents, opening proper champagne bought with my own money, and seeing in the New Year without arguments and lists. You deal with your traditions yourself.

Antonia stepped in her way:

If you leave, the marriage is over! I wont let Victor live with someone like you!

Perfect, Marina put on her coat, hands steady. Tell your son Ill be filing for divorce after the holidays. Let him sort things out without mummys advice.

She walked out and closed the door. Something crashed behind herAntonia hurling an object at the wall. Marina took the stairs, got in her car, and drove off.

Her phone rang constantly for half an hour. Victorpleading, then angry, then pathetic. Antoniawith threats and curses. Marina ignored them all, blocked their numbers.

Her parents greeted her without questions. Her mother laid out a simple spreadsalad, roast chicken, homemade starters. Her father opened the champagne.

When Big Ben chimed midnight, Marina stood by the window with her glass. Somewhere, Victor and Antonia were explaining to hungry relatives why the table held only margarine and mustard. Somewhere, her mother-in-law lost face in front of those whose praise shed craved. Somewhere, her husband heard the word failure directed at him for the first time.

Here, it was peaceful and quiet.

Happy New Year, darling, her father hugged her. And to your new life.

Her phone vibrateda message from an unknown number: a photo of the children at the home, gathered around a feast, faces beaming with joy. The caption from the manager: Thank you. You made this a real holiday.

Marina looked at the screen and realised: shed spent her money well. Not on someone elses greed, but for those who truly needed it.

She raised her glass. For herself. For finding the courage to say enough. For making sure the fridge was empty, not by accident, but because she chose it.
