Я поліцейський, звиклий до щоденних обходів. Разом зі мною був Макс, німецька вівчарка з гострим нюхом. Вірний, дисциплінований, він завжди був напоготові. О 16:00 все йшло звичайним чином.
Раптом Макс зупинився, насторожився, почав уважно озиратися. Потім він занервував, нюхаючи повітря, немов шукав щось конкретне. Його зір став гострим, рухи напруженими. Я пішов за ним, здивований зміною його поведінки.
Він підбіг до жінки з дитячим візком. Вона йшла спокійно, не помічаючи незвичайного гавкоту. Макс біляв, голосно, майже виючи, ніби попереджаючи про загрозу. Жінка зупинилася, збентежено дивлячись на мене.
Я підійшов, щоб перевірити візок. Відсунув ковдру і серце замерло.
Там не було дитини.
