Making It to the Golden Wedding

Emily and John had spent twenty-five years together. She was fifty, and he was two years her senior. Their married life was much like anyone elses in the villagea home, daily chores, work, and their son Matthew, now grown, living in the city. Hed finished college and was working at the local steelworks.

One weekend, Matthew came home, bringing along a charming young woman.

Meet my lovely parents. This is Chloe. Were planning to get married soon, just need to pop into the registry office, he said.

Hello, Chloe answered shyly, her cheeks turning pink.

Welcome, Chloe, come in and make yourself at home, Emily gushed, bustling about as she set the table with homemade cakes and tea.

Chloe made a wonderful impression on the parents. Not long after, the couple returned to the city. It wasnt long before Matthew rang his mother with the news: theyd be wed by summer. Emily received the message with joy and quickly shared it with John, who beamed at the thought.

Everything seemed well, yet Emilys heart was troubled. Who could have expected that at fifty, she would fall deeply for their neighbournone other than Johns old friend, Michael.

Michael dropped by one evening clutching a bottle of brandy. His wife, Margaret, worked as a train conductor and was often away for weeks at a time. She didnt seem to mind leaving Michael on his own. Their daughter, Grace, lived in the city and would sometimes visit, bringing groceries for her father when Margaret was away. Otherwise, Margaret and Michael kept in touch over the phone, and when she was home, it was only for a week or so before shed be off on the trains again.

Mike, let me show you this electric drill I picked up at the market in townbeen meaning to get one for agesreal bit of kit! John said, leaping up to fetch it from the shed.

Before John had left the room, Michael slid an arm around Emilys waist, pulling her close and pressing a kiss to her neck. A flush surged through her veins. She heard the garden door squeak and immediately stepped back, busying herself with wiping the table, eyes down, afraid to look at her husband. She could feel her cheeks aglow.

John, oblivious to his wifes rosy face and his friends flustered look, handed the box over.

Thats a beauty, mateproper useful. Deserves a toast, he said, pouring brandy into glasses. Emily, joining us?

No, Im quite worn out. Ill leave you to it, Emily replied, escaping to her room and glancing in the mirror. What a shameless woman you are, Emily, acting like youre eighteen again, she whispered, smiling coyly at her reflection.

Emily had grown rounder with age, her figure more generous and her face softer, retaining a certain charm. And her eyesthose beautiful eyesalways stood out. With some makeup and a nice dress and heels, she could still turn heads at any village do. Shed secretly fancied Michael for years; tall, rugged, his smouldering glances always left her heart fluttering. Just recently shed found outhe fancied her right back.

At fifty-four, Michael had been married to Margaret for ages. The two couples were good friends. Not long ago, as Emily walked to the shop, Michael called out, Em, would you pop in and help me cook some dumplings?

Mike, Im in a rush, she replied, glancing anxiously back towards her house, regretting not putting on a bit of lipstick or fixing her hair.

Still, almost without thinking, Emily found herself in his garden, climbing the steps to his front door, where Michael swept her into his arms the moment she shut it behind her. Michaels kisses stole her breath, neither of them pausing to question their sudden, reckless desire.

That shops not going anywhere, Michael murmured. I just needed to know how long to boil these dumplings, trulyno idea.

About ten minutes, Mike. You mean to say youve never cooked them before?

Plenty of firsts lately, love, he grinned. Without Margaret, Im hopeless.

Perhaps I should help cook

No, weve got other business, he replied, holding her tighter than ever.

He tossed her coat to the floor and pressed his face against her neck.

Oh, Mike, Im married, Emily protested.

So am I, but that hardly matters, does it? I like youalways have. And if Im honest, seems like John barely notices you anymore. You deserve more happiness.

Emily didnt resist; her own husband hadnt called her beautiful or said a kind word in years. Hadnt she earned at least that? Their embrace soon crossed a lineher first betrayal.

After, lying in the place where Margaret usually slept, Emilys conscience barely whispered to her. She convinced herself it was just.

Youre gorgeous, Em. Id live with you, yknow, Michael sighed. Margarets all phone calls now, always off to the Midlands or the North. Honestly, wouldnt surprise me if she had some fella herselfa train driver, maybe? Or another conductor?

His kisses left Emily dizzy, but she remembered her errand and quickly redressed. As she reached the door, she heard Graces voice: Hello, Auntie Emily! Emily blushed, straightening herself.

Hello, Grace. I was just showing your dad how to boil dumplings. No idea without Margaret, you know.

Dad, honestly! Ive shown you a dozen times, Grace laughed, unloading groceries. Hope youre eating properly.

Ill be off nowsee you later. Grace can fill you in, Emily said. Her heart thumped, cheeks aflame. She was falling in love with the one man in the village shed never thought shed have.

She visited Michael more and more. Village gossip soon followed.

Long time for the shops, isnt it? John remarked caustically one evening. She missed the implication. And what exactly were you doing with Mike?

Oh, you know hes hopeless without Margaret. Wanted to know how to cook dumplings. Grace was there toolooks like she might be getting married herself soon.

Michael was more direct: If we get caught, well just say its love. Margaret can go to her own fancy man. As for John He trailed off, pulling Emily in for a kiss.

Oh, Mike, what are we doing? Nearly fifty and headlong into a romance.

Love knows no age, Emily, Michael affirmed, embracing her.

Her last shreds of shame faded, convinced that she deserved to feel alive again.

The dalliance lasted another week. Once, John nearly caught Emily at Michaels. She had to hide in the woodshed while the men talked outside.

That evening, John confronted her.

I know everything George told me he saw you slipping into Mikes garden. Weve got our silver anniversary do at the village hall in three daysguests invited, buffet ordered and you

Im sorry, John. She dropped her eyes. I dont know what came over me. But it happens with men too, doesnt it? Middle-aged madness Her husband cursed at her bitterly.

Call me what you like, but I really am sorry, John.

Well get through the party, pretend alls fine, and then were done. You can explain it to Matthew yourself. Weddings soon, and his mothers gallivanting all over the place.

The anniversary came. The hall was packed; Emily sat beside John in a new dress, jewellery gleaming, glancing now and then at Michaelwho was alone, Margaret still away on the trains. Rumours swirled among the guests. Emily noticed the looks.

Let them stare and mutter, she thought. They dont know what real love is. She smiled quietly.

Someone raised a toastMichael, bold as ever: Heres to another twenty-five years, health and happiness to allmay we meet again in a quarter-century.

After the anniversary, John decided it was time to talk about divorce. He kept clear of Michael, feeling betrayed.

Well talk tonight, he resolved.

Emily decided to stop by Michaels for strength before facing her husband. But, as she entered the garden, Michael stepped out from the shed, his hand up.

Margarets back, he whispered.

Havent you told her?

What should I say?

That were together, Michael.

Keep your voice down, he hissed, glancing at the door. Emily, youre a grown woman. Its been fun, but lets not overdo it. I love Margaret. When shes home, its like nothing else exists. Alls well between us.

What about me? John knows now, everyone does. I tried so hard all for you.

Just look your best for John. Youre lovely, Emily, but youre not mine. Ive got Margaretshes a great cook, brilliant homemaker.

Emily turned on her heel and left without another word.

That evening, John and Emily finally talked.

I want a divorce. Youve made me a laughing stock.

Emily broke down in tears, devastated. John was her family, her partner of so many years. The passion had faded but not the life theyd built togethershe knew his every habit and whim, and wasnt that worth something?

Im sorry, John. You were right to be furious. Ive been foolish, truly. Lets try to put this behind usfor our sons sake, too, with his wedding coming up. Lets look forward to grandchildren together

She remembered Johns forgiving heart, and deep down, knew he loved her still. Time passed. They reconciled, a little older and a little wiser. Soon, they welcomed two beautiful grandchildren, whose visits filled their hearts with happiness.

As for Michael, he kept up his old ways. Whenever Margaret left, he was often seen dashing across the village to visit this or that widow but never called by Johns anymore. Their friendship was broken. Margaret eventually retired, and though they often bickered, it was their lifeand no one elses business. As they say, every home has its own secrets

The years rolled gently on, showing Emily and John that love is less about fireworks and more about forgiveness, loyalty, and cherishing the life built together, brick by brick. Lifes real treasure is not in chasing fleeting passion but in holding dear the quietly steadfast heart by your side.
