Im 38 years old, and just two days ago, my wife decided to forgive me for an affair that lasted several months.

It all started at work, earlier this year. A new colleague joined our team, and we quickly hit it off. With long shifts and shared lunches, we spent a great deal of time togetherfirst chatting about work, then about life. I confided in her that everything at home seemed to revolve around the children nowadays, that my wife was always exhausted, and that our conversations had nearly dwindled away. I didnt speak poorly of my wife directly, but I gradually painted a picture of distance growing between us.

Over time, we began seeing each other outside of work as well. At first it was just coffees, then the odd pint together, and eventually our meetings became longer and more frequent. After a couple of months, it had turned into a proper relationship. We saw each other once or twice a week. Yet I would come home as if nothing had happenedsit down for dinner with my family, tuck the kids into bed, and go to sleep, all the while hiding a constant sense of guilt I grew used to masking.

My behaviour shifted. I grew irritable, distracted, constantly glued to my phone. My wife noticed, but said nothing for a long time. I honestly thought I had everything under controlthat I was managing it well.

I was wrong.

In November, my eldest son found her photo on my phone.

After that, I had no more secretslater that same week, I told my wife everything. I explained how long it had lasted, who it was with, how it began. I didnt try to downplay any of it.

She didnt cry in front of me.

She only told me to leave the room and spend the nights in our sons room. Thats how the whole of Novemberand part of Decemberwent by.

Those weeks were the worst of my life.

For the children, we kept things normal, but between us, we spoke as little as possible. I went to work, came home, and slept on a mattress next to my sons bed. I saw my wife every day, but I couldnt touch her couldnt even look at her in the same way. The house was quiet, but tension hung heavy in the air.

She spoke with her sister, with a close friend, and saw a counsellor on her own.

I respected her space. I didnt push. I didnt beg for forgiveness day after day. I simply took care of the children, managed the house, and accepted the consequences.

Two days ago, just before Christmas, she asked me to talk.

She said it had been a hard month. Shed thought about leaving. But she didnt want to make a final decision just as the holidays arrived and risk tearing the family apart.

She admitted she still didnt trust me.

But she was willing to try to rebuild, slowly, step by step.

This evening, she told me she forgives menot because what I did was small, but because she wants to give herself a chance, to see if theres anything left to save.

I know forgiveness doesnt instantly fix what I broke.

But after almost losing everything, one thing is clear: this second chance is not a gift.

It is a tremendous responsibilityone I have to earn, every single day.
