The Day of My Wedding Arrived, But My Parents Didn’t Attend Because They Hadn’t Needed Me Since I Was a Child

When I was young, my brother, sister, and I were quite close in age. As the middle child, I often ended up wearing my sisters old clothes and using her hand-me-downs. She always seemed to be the focus of my parents attention and received special treatment, while I often felt invisible and overlooked. My parents put their money and effort into her education, whereas I was left to figure things out for myself. Even though I did well at school, my parents never showed any interest or pride in what I accomplished.

That lack of support wore down my confidence, making it hard for me to stand up for myself or ask for what I deserved. Despite all this, I managed to earn a place at a highly respected university. Still, my parents didnt acknowledge my achievement. Instead, they told me to find a job if I couldnt win a scholarship. Feeling deeply let down by their lack of care, I moved into student accommodation, where I eventually met the man who would become my husband. During my university years, I became pregnant, and my partner and I decided to get married.

My parents were completely against it. They demanded I get rid of the baby, shouted at me, called me names, and refused any kind of supportfinancial or emotional. At the same time, they bought my sister a brand new car. Despite being on my own, I had my son, and my husbands family kindly gave us a flat to live in. My parents offered a quick, half-hearted congratulation and showed barely any real interest in my new life.

Time moved onmy son grew, and we welcomed another child into our family. My life gradually improved with the support of my husband and his caring relatives. Then one day, my mother reached out to tell me about my sisters upcoming wedding and asked if I could take out a loan to help pay for it. I refused, and my mother disowned me, insisting I was no longer part of the family.

That was when I decided it was time to stand up for myself and draw some boundaries. I had put up with enough neglect and unfairness. Now, I have a loving familyone I built with my husband and childrenand Ive come to realise that a real family is a bond forged through love and kindness, not just a matter of blood.
