Sarah married young, and when she had her son at the age of 23, she didnt show much interest in caring for him. Instead, she left him with his grandmother, sending over some money from time to time while she enjoyed a carefree life with her husband. Two years later, circumstances forced them to bring their son home, but Sarah didnt acknowledge him as her own and kept her distance. She enrolled him in nursery to limit their contact, and later sent him to primary school, where he was teased and struggled academically.

Neither parent took an active role in his upbringing or education, and when the school attempted to involve Sarahs husband, he responded aggressively. Upon finishing school, Sarah pushed her son into a job at a factory, where he eventually met his future wife. The young couple were given a flat by the factory management. Still, Sarah remained detached from her grandchildren, occasionally sending money for birthdays or Christmas but rarely showing real interest.
