The son ignored his mother’s desperate plea for help as she was about to undergo surgery in hospital, while he and his wife were away on holiday—but there’s a rational explanation for his actions
Sarah married young, and when she had her son at the age of 23, she didnt show much interest in caring for him. Instead, she left him with his grandmother, sending over some money from time to time while she enjoyed a carefree life with her husband. Two years later, circumstances forced them to bring their son home, but Sarah didnt acknowledge him as her own and kept her distance. She enrolled him in nursery to limit their contact, and later sent him to primary school, where he was teased and struggled academically.
Neither parent took an active role in his upbringing or education, and when the school attempted to involve Sarahs husband, he responded aggressively. Upon finishing school, Sarah pushed her son into a job at a factory, where he eventually met his future wife. The young couple were given a flat by the factory management. Still, Sarah remained detached from her grandchildren, occasionally sending money for birthdays or Christmas but rarely showing real interest.
When Sarah reached retirement age, she wanted to celebrate with a grand party. She asked her son to help organise it, requesting that he use the money shed sent to buy food and presents for the grandchildren. He and his wife sent their children off to the countryside to avoid any fuss and prepared diligently for the celebration. When Sarah arrived, they welcomed her and the guests who enjoyed themselves late into the night.
However, when everyone had left, Sarah informed her son and daughter-in-law that shed be leaving early, so she wouldnt see the grandchildren when they returned from their other grandmother. She left behind only a sliver of cake for them to share. Her son was deeply hurt by her indifference.
A week later, Sarah phoned again, explaining she had to visit the hospital for an operation and asked her son to bring her some essentials. He responded coldly, saying he and his wife were going on holiday, which she already knew. He suggested she call his father instead.
Eventually, someone made Sarah realise that the world didnt revolve around her, and her son finally put himself and his own family first.
“‘How ill‑timed their anniversary,’ she whispered. ‘They even managed to celebrate it out in the village.’ Snippets of a disgruntled man’s remarks reached Lucy, and she realized her husband’s brother had invited them to a 25‑year—silver—wedding celebration.”
