The Surprising Reason My Son-in-Law Chose to Marry My Daughter
I simply couldnt fathom why my daughter was in such a tearing hurry to marry her boyfriend, whom shed known for, what, all of four weeks? I even started wondering if she was expecting a little one. What else could possibly trigger a whirlwind wedding like that? But she put her foot downinsisted there wasnt a baby on the way. Apparently, they were simply dizzy with love and simply couldnt stand being apart for another moment. Well, who am I to rain on a love parade? Plenty go a lifetime without feeling that kind of passion, so I was more relieved than anything.
Plans for a wedding took off immediatelyhis side chipped in, and so did we, both tossing a few pounds into the matrimonial pot.
On the big day, everyone was beaming and dancing about, wine glasses clinking. But the grooms mother wandered around looking as though someone had told her the caterers had run off with the cake. At first, I assumed she just wasnt sold on her sons choice and honestly, I didnt feel like marching over to poke the bear. But her gloom clouded the room, so eventually I sidled over.
When I gently asked what was up, she sat in silence for a bit, eyes darting everywhere but at me. Then, voice wobbling and tears welling, she let it all tumble out.
“This wedding should never have happened,” she sniffed. “My son will only make your daughter miserable. Hes in no way in love with hernever has been. This is all revenge. His ex-girlfriend cheated on him with his best mate, so hes decided to get married just to get back at her. I told him not to dare, but do the young ever listen?”
As she spilled this soap opera, I thought, what absolute rot. Id asked my daughter at least half a dozen times if everything was tickety-boo with her fiancé, and she always assured me all was divine. At the time, I chalked the mother-in-laws tearful performance up to wedding jitters or perhaps an unhealthy attachment to her son.
But, lo and behold, two months down the line, my daughter turned up on the doorstep in floods of tears, dragging her suitcases behind her. Turns out her darling husband had filed for divorce. He confessed he was still hopelessly tangled up in his ex, that my daughter left him cold, and yes, hed married her for the sake of revenge.
Now every time I put the kettle on, the guilt bubbles up. Why didnt I put a stop to it? I had a niggling feeling and still, I let love run riot.
