Victor Gregory kept a covert eye on Oliver, unnoticed—after decades in senior posts he’s a true professional! So far Oliver has had no missteps, no guests at home, nothing suspicious. But you can’t outwit Victor; he knows he just has to wait, and Oliver will inevitably slip—intuition won’t betray him.
Victor Hartley kept a careful eye on Oliver, so subtle that the younger man never sensed it. After all, Victor had spent decades in senior posts; he was a seasoned professional. Yet up to now nothing had gone wrongOliver never brought anyone home, and he kept to himself without a hint of suspicion. Victor knew, however, that patience would be rewarded; sooner or later Oliver would slip, because his instincts would not let him fail.
It mattered deeply to Victor, for it touched his own life, his family, and his legacy. He remembered how delighted he had felt when his daughter Imogen was born. At first Victor had been dismayed that the baby was a girl instead of the son hed imagined. He never showed it, but inside a tiny ache lingereda girl! he thought. Who will I confide in when times are hard? Who will teach me about life, who will shape a true person?
He had married late; his demanding career left little room for romance, and his relentless schedule did not endear him to many women. Then he met Lily Whitaker. Lily was already nearing forty, so dreaming of a son was no longer realistic.
Everything changed the day Imogens small hand slipped around Victors nose and she gave him her first grin. He was smitten in an instant. A few weeks later Imogen toddled uncertainly, stopped, and, as if something stirred her, ran to Victor shouting, Dad! Dad! He scooped her up, pressed her close, and realized that the greatest treasure in his life was her happiness. He would never allow anyone to hurt his little star.
Victor, youre spoiling us! Imogen laughed. Victor bought presents for his beloved daughters, and watching their bright eyes filled him with contentment.
How had Imogen grown so quickly? Not long before, she clung to his large hand while he escorted her to nursery. Then she would look up at him, eyes shining, and say, Dad, youre huge! Will you buy me a teddy bear? The compliment made Victor feel invincible. By the time she finished school, she enrolled in a parttime college and started a job, declaring, Dad, I need to be independent now. Ill gain experience straight away, no time to waste. Victor beamed at her determination; she truly was sharp.
One afternoon Lily baked a pie, her eyes twinkling like a secret treasure. Victor wondered if the girls were planning to ask him for something, perhaps a favor. But the surprise was different. Imogen, just turned twenty, smiled at Victor and brushed an invisible dust from his shoulder. Dad, I want you to meet someone, she said. Oliver is very kind; were thinking of making it official. Ive invited him for tea today. Oh, here he ishes calling!
Lily opened the front door. Good evening, come in, she greeted. Im Lily Whitaker, and this is Victor Hartley. Victor nodded, shook Olivers hand, and felt a sudden dryness in his mouth.
A thought flashed through Victors mind: this man was coming to take his only daughter away. A stranger will whisk my girl from my home! he imagined. A rational voice whispered, What do you want? Do you not wish happiness for your child? Hes a good man, stronghanded. Why would you keep her forever with you alone?
Victor, however, ignored the voice of reason. He decided that Oliver was unworthy of Imogen and resolved to test him. Over the next weeks Victor stationed himself in his work car near Olivers house, using latenight errands as an excuse. He trailed Oliver discreetly after he escorted Imogen home, hoping to uncover any flaw.
Finally, one afternoon, Victor saw a young woman approach Olivers driveway holding a tiny girls hand. He rushed forward, seized the womans bag, and watched them disappear inside. His suspicion deepened: Oliver was not who he claimed to be. Yet a part of Victor felt an odd familiarity with the young manperhaps he saw in Oliver a reflection of his own restless youth, open and straightforward.
Imogen burst into the room, beaming. Dad, our wedding is in a week! Oliver and I booked a café for the celebration. Im so thrilled. Victor stared at his daughter, mortified that he had been spying on his future soninlaw. Imogen continued, Dad, Olivers parents will arrive tomorrow evening; theyll stay over. My sister Natalie is coming later with her daughter, too, because her husband is away on business.
At the wedding Victor danced with Lily, feeling young again. He decided that endless suspicion was futile; he would no longer mix his professional vigilance with his personal life.
A year later Imogen gave birth to a baby boy, Samuel. Victor, now a proud grandfather, wept openly. His dreams had come true: he finally had a son to talk to, a soninlaw who proved to be a genuinely wonderful fellow, and a bustling household filled with laughter. Little Samuel grew quickly, babbling and giggling, a bright new joy in Victors days.
Victor kept the episode of his secret watch over Oliver to himself, realizing that trust, once broken, is hard to rebuild. He learned that protecting loved ones does not mean spying on them; it means offering faith and support. In the end, the greatest security comes not from suspicion, but from trusting the hearts of those we hold dear.
