Соломія Петрівна прокинулася від звуку, який не змогла відразу розпізнати. Легке поскрипучування дощок у коридорі, ніби хтось обережно крадеться по квартирі. Жінка прислухалася, серце забилося частіше. Поруч мирно сопів чоловік, Микола Іванович навіть не ворухнувся.
— Коль, — прошепотіла вона, ледве торкнувшись його плеча. — Коль, ти чуєш?
— Мм? Що таке? — пробурмотів він, не відкриваючи очей.
— Хтось ходить по квартирі.
Микола Іванович неохоче розплющив одне око, подивився на світяться цифри годинника.
— Соломіє, друга година ночі. Тобі причулося.
— Не причулося! Я чітко чую кроки!
Чоловік зітхнув, але все ж прислухався. І справді, десь у глибині квартири лунали ледве чутні звуки. Скрип, шелест, легкий постук.
— Напевно, кіт, — заспокоїв він дружину. — Барсик знову вночі мається.
— Який кіт, Коль? Барсик помер років три тому, ти що, забув?
