Wedding Gift from the Mother-in-Law: Better Nothing Than This!

Emily and James were set to marry. The reception was in full swing when the wedding host announced it was time for gifts. First, the brides parents offered their congratulations, then came James mother, Margaret Whitmore, carrying a large, pale blue-wrapped box.

What on earth could that be? Emily whispered excitedly to James.

No idea. Mums kept it a complete secret, he replied, just as puzzled.

They agreed to open the presents the next day, once the wedding chaos had settled. Emily suggested starting with his mothers gift. They untied the ribbon, lifted the lidand froze in disbelief.

For a long time, Emily had noticed something odd about James: he never took anything without asking, not even the smallest thing.

Mind if I have the last chocolate? hed say hesitantly, eyeing the lone truffle in the bowl.

Of course! Emily would reply, baffled. You didnt even need to ask.

Force of habit, hed murmur sheepishly as he unwrapped it.

It took months before Emily understood why.

One evening, James introduced her to his parentsMargaret and Henry Whitmore. At first, his mother seemed warm, but that illusion shattered at dinner.

Each guest had a plate with two spoonfuls of mash and a tiny meatball. James finished quickly and quietly asked for seconds.

Always stuffing your face like theres no tomorrow! Cant ever fill you up, can we? Margaret snapped, loud enough for everyone to hear. Emily stiffened in shock.

When Henry asked for more, Margaret beamed and piled his plate high. Emily kept eating, stunned by the blatant disdain for her own son.

Later, during wedding planning, Margarets true colours showed. Everything was too expensivethe rings, the venue, the menu.

Why all this extravagance? A modest do wouldve been just fine! she griped openly.

Eventually, Emily snapped.

Were handling it ourselves! she shot back. Its our pounds, our choice!

Offended, Margaret fell silent and even threatened to skip the wedding altogether.

Two days before the big day, Henry turned up unexpectedly at their flat.

Son, help me with the gift, he said, leading James to the car.

Hed gone rogue and bought them a washing machinejust to defy his wifes stubbornness. Confession: theyd rowed fiercely because Margaret thought any gift for her own son was “too lavish.”

On the day, Margaret arrived after allwearing an elegant dress, arriving by cab. She behaved impeccably, handed over the large box, then melted into the crowd.

The next morning, Emily and James eagerly opened it. Their excitement turned to crushing disappointment.

Towels? Emily muttered, pulling out the first one.

And socks, James sighed, holding up two pairs of fluffy wool ones. Dad was right She just grabbed whatever was lying around. Hard to believe shes become this tight-fisted. No gift wouldve been better.

But it didnt end there. Days later, Margaret calledto interrogate them about the other presents.

Well? Out with it! What did Emilys mum give you? And Uncle George? Her friends? she pressed.

James refused to play along.

Mum, thats none of your business. Emily and I are happy.

Then he hung upwithout guilt, for the first time in his life.

Life teaches us: the size of a gift says nothing about the givers heart. But respect and love are found in the little things. And Margaret, it seemed, had run out of those long ago.
