Remembering now an event that occurred long ago, a tense atmosphere dominated the business class section. Passengers exchanged hostile glances with the elderly woman as she took her seat. However, the airplane’s captain nevertheless approached her toward the end of the flight.

Eleanor occupied her seat with excitement. Immediately, an argument broke out.

“I am not willing to sit next to her!” shouted a roughly forty-year-old man loudly, eyeing the woman’s simple dress sharply while speaking to the flight attendant.

The man’s name was Henry Sutton. He did not conceal his arrogance and disdain.

“Excuse me, but the passenger has a ticket exactly for this seat. We cannot relocate her,” the flight attendant replied calmly, although Sutton kept watching Eleanor with suspicion.

“These seats are too expensive for such people,” he snapped sarcastically, looking around as if hoping for support.

Eleanor remained silent, though everything within her tightened. She wore her best dresssimple yet neat. It was the only suitable one for such an important event.

Some passengers looked at each other, and a few nodded to Henry.

Then the grandmother quietly raised her hand, unable to bear it any longer, and spoke up:

“It’s fine… If there is space in economy class, I will move there. I have saved my entire life for this flight, and I do not want to be an obstacle to anyone…”

Eleanor was eighty-five years old. This was her first flight. The journey from New York to London had involved difficulties: long corridors stretching for kilometers, the hustle of terminals, and endless waiting. Even an airport worker had accompanied her so she would not get lost.

Now, with only hours left until the realization of her dream, she had to face humiliation.

But the flight attendant held her ground:

“Excuse me, grandmother, but you paid for this ticket and have every right to be here. Do not let anyone take that away from you.”

She looked sternly at Henry, then added coolly:

“If you do not stop, I will call security.”

With that, he fell silent, grumbling.

The plane rose into the sky. In her excitement, Eleanor dropped her bag, when suddenly Henry silently helped her collect the items.

When he returned the bag, his gaze caught on a medallion decorated with a blood-red stone.

“A nice medallion,” he said. “It might be a ruby. I know a bit about antiques. Such a piece is not cheap.”

Eleanor smiled.

“I do not know how much it is worth… My father gave it to my mother as a gift before he left for the war. He never returned. My mother gave it to me when I was ten years old.”

She opened the medallion, which contained two old photographs: one showing a young couple, and the other a little boy smiling at the world.

“These are my parents…” she said gently. “And here is my son.”

“Are you flying to him?” Henry asked cautiously.

“No,” Eleanor replied with head bowed. “I gave him to an orphanage when he was still a baby. Then I had neither husband nor job. I could not provide him a normal life. Recently I found him with a DNA test. I wrote to him… But he replied that he does not want to know me. Today is his birthday. I just wanted to be near him, even if only for a moment…”

Henry was surprised.

“Then why fly?”

The elderly woman smiled faintly, with bitterness glittering in her eyes:

“He is the captain of the flight. This is the only way to be close to him. At least for a glance…”

Henry was silent. Shame flooded him, and he lowered his eyes.

The flight attendant, after hearing all this, quietly left for the cockpit.

A few minutes later, the captain’s voice sounded in the cabin:

“Dear passengers, we will soon begin the descent to Heathrow Airport. But first I would like to say something to a special lady on board. Mother… please stay after landing. I want to see you.”

Eleanor froze. Tears flowed down her face. Silence fell over the cabin, then someone began to clap, others smiled with tears in their eyes.

When the airplane landed, the captain broke the rules: he ran out of the cockpit and, without wiping his tears, rushed to Eleanor. He hugged her so tightly as if he wanted to bring back the lost years.

“Thank you, mother, for everything you did for me,” he whispered, holding her close.

Eleanor sobbed as she clung to him:

“There is nothing to forgive. I have always loved you…”

Henry stepped aside, lowering his head. He was ashamed. He realized that behind the poor dress and the wrinkles hid a story of great sacrifice and love.
