“Mum Lives Off My Money” — Those Words Froze Me in FrightI stood there, the phone still pressed to my ear, as every memory of her lavish gifts and sudden holidays snapped into sharp, horrible focus.

“Mum is living off my money.” Those words made me freeze in horror. “Mum is living at our expense” hit me like an icy slap. Even now I cannot forget the day I read my son’s message, a message that made my blood run cold. My life in my London flat was turned upside down, and the pain of his words still echoes in my heart.

Years ago, my son Henry Whitfield and his wife Poppy moved in with me straight after their wedding. We celebrated the births of their children together, lived through illnesses and first steps. Poppy was on maternity leave, first with the first child, then the second, then the third. When she could not cope, I took sick leave to look after my grandchildren. The house became a whirlwind of housework: cooking, cleaning, children’s laughter and tears. I knew little peace, but I grew used to the chaos.

I longed for my pension like a kind of salvation. I counted the days on the calendar and dreamed of a little quiet. Yet the harmony lasted only six months. Every morning I drove Henry and Poppy to work, made breakfast for the grandchildren, fed them, and took them to nursery and school. With the youngest I walked in the park, then we came home, cooked lunch, washed up and tidied. In the evening I took them to music lessons.

My days were planned down to the minute. But every now and then I found a moment for my passion: reading and embroidery. It was my refuge, a small island of calm in the turmoil. One day a message arrived from Henry. When I read it, I froze, unable to believe what I saw.

At first I thought it was a cruel joke. Later Henry admitted he had sent the message to me by mistake. But it was too late: his words burned into my soul. “Mum is living at our expense, and on top of that we spend money on her medication.” I told him I had forgiven him, but I could not go on living under the same roof.

How could he write such a thing? I spent every penny of my pension on the household. Most of my medicines were free because I was a pensioner. But his words showed what he truly thought. I stayed silent and made no fuss. Instead I rented a small flat and moved out, saying I would be better off on my own.

The rent swallowed nearly all my pension. Little was left, but I would not ask my son for help. Before retiring, I had bought a laptop, despite Poppy’s remark that I would never manage it. But I did manage. The daughter of a friend showed me how to use it.

I began taking photographs of my embroidery and sharing them on social media. I asked former colleagues for recommendations. After a week, my passion brought in my first money. The amounts were modest, but they gave me the certainty that I would not go under and would not have to humble myself before my son.

A month later, a neighbour came and asked me to teach her granddaughter sewing and embroidery, for payment. That girl was my first student. Soon two more followed. The parents paid generously, and slowly my situation improved.

But the wound in my heart did not heal. I barely spoke to Henry’s family now. We only see each other at family gatherings.
