Linda, have you lost your marbles in your old age? Your grandchildren are already at schoolwhat on earth do you need a wedding for? Thats what my sister said when I told her I was getting married.

Well, what was left to wait for? In a week Tom and I are off to the registry office, so I thought Id better let my sister know. No chance shed make it to the ceremonyits not like we live anywhere near each other. Plus, we wont be throwing any big do with people chanting Kiss! at our age. Well just sign the papers in peace, then have a quiet meal together.

Honestly, we couldve skipped the official bit, but Tom insisted. Hes a gentleman through and through: always holding doors open, offering a hand when I get out of the car, helping with my coat. Theres no way hed want to live together without the paperworkhe said it straight: Im not some teen, am I? I want a proper relationship. And to me, Tom does feel like a youngster, even with that grey hair. At work, everyone calls him Mr Thompson and treats him with respect. There hes a different man: serious, strict. But as soon as he spots me, he seems to drop forty years, scoops me up and starts spinning me around in the street. As much as it makes me happy, its proper embarrassing. I protest, People are staring, theyll only laugh. And he just grins, What people? Youre all I see! When were together, it really feels like theres no one else in the world.

But Ive got my sister, Michelle, and she has to be told everything. I was afraid shed judge me, like so many others have, but her opinion meant the world to me, so I finally worked up the nerve to call.

Lindaaaa… she trailed off, her voice full of shock when I said I was getting married, Its only been a year since you buried Victor and youve already replaced him! Id expected her to be surprised but didnt realise my late husband would be the sticking point.

I cut her off, Michelle, I remember. But who makes the rules? Can you tell me exactly how long Im supposed to wait before Im allowed to be happy without being judged?

She hesitated. Well, just for decencys sake, wait at least five years.

So, whatam I supposed to tell Tom: Sorry, come back in five years, Im still in mourning? She fell silent again.

And what difference would it make? I went on. Do you really think people wouldnt talk even after five years? Therell always be gossipers. I honestly dont care about them. But what you think matters, and if you insist, Ill call the wedding off.

She finally said, I dont want to be the villaintie the knot today for all I care! But you should know I dont agree with you, and I dont support you. Youve always had your own way, but I never thought youd lose the plot in your old age. Have a bit of sense at least, wait a year. Still, I refused to back down.

You say wait another year, but what if Tom and I only have a year left togetherwhat then?

She sniffled. Oh do as you please. I do get that people want happiness, but you spent so many years happy already

I laughed. Michelle, really? Did you think I was happy all those years? To be honest, so did I. Only now have I realised what I actually was: a workhorse. I didnt even know life could bring anything elsebut it can!

Victor was a good man. We raised two daughters, and now Ive got five grandchildren. He always said family was everything, and I never argued. First we worked ourselves to the bone for our girls, then for their families, then for the grandkids. Now when I look back, it seems my whole life was one long slog for a bit of comfort, without a pause for breath. By the time our eldest married, we had a cottage in the country, but Victor thought that wasnt enough and wanted to rear animals for the grandchildren.

We rented another couple of acres and saddled ourselves with all the chores that come with livestock. We were never in bed before midnight and up at five in the morning. We lived at that cottage year round, hardly ever coming into town. If I managed to grab a quick phone call with my friends, theyd be braggingone just got back from the seaside with her granddaughter, another had been to the theatre with her husband, while I couldnt even find time for a trip to the shops!

There were days wed go without bread because tending to the animals left us no time for anything else. The only thing that kept me going was knowing our kids and grandkids were well fed. Our eldest was able to get a new car because of the farm, the youngest did up her flatso it felt worth it.

One time, my old colleague came to visit. She looked me up and down and said, Linda, at first, I didnt even recognise you! I thought youd be out here enjoying the country air, getting fitbut you look half-dead! Why put yourself through this?

What else can I do? The kids need help, I replied.

Theyre adults! Let them sort themselves out. Why not live a little for yourself?

Back then, I didnt know what live for yourself meant. But I do now. You can sleep as long as you like, take your time running errands, go to the cinema or go swimming, even skiing. Nobody suffers if I enjoy myself. The kids arent poor, the grandkids dont go hungry, and Ive started seeing the world with new eyes.

I used to curse at all the leaves cluttering up the garden in autumnnow, just kicking them about in the park makes me grin like a child. I love the rain; instead of getting soaked to herd the goats inside, I get to watch it from a cosy coffee shop. Only lately Ive noticed how stunning clouds and sunsets are, and how much joy there is in just walking through fresh snow. I finally realised how lovely our town really is. Tom opened my eyes to all of this.

When Victor died, it all seemed like a bad dream. He had a heart attack and was gone before the ambulance arrived. The girls quickly sold the farm, packed up the cottage and brought me back into town. For days, I wandered around the flat at five in the morning, not knowing what to do with myself.

And then Tom came along. He was my neighbour and happened to be friends with my son-in-law. Hed helped us move from the country. He later told me he hadnt thought about me romantically at allhe just felt sorry for me, for this woman looking so lost and lifeless. He recognised that deep down, I was full of life, just stuck in a rut. One day, he marched me off for a walk in the park. We sat on a bench, he bought me an ice cream, then suggested we visit the pond and feed the ducks. Id kept ducks at the cottage, but Id never had a minute to watch them, only enough time to feed and clean up after them. It turns out, ducks are hilariousflapping about after bits of bread!

I cant believe were just standing here watching ducks, I admitted. At the cottage, I never had a spare moment.

Tom just smiled, took my hand, and said, Wait and see, LindaIll show you a world of wonders. Itll be like youre young again.

And he was right. I felt like a child, discovering the world anew every day, so much so that my old life began to feel like a heavy sleep. I dont even remember when it dawned on me that I simply couldnt live without Tomhis voice, his laugh, the warmth of his hand. One morning, I just woke up knowing that this, right now, was real life, and it was everything.

My daughters werent thrilledthey thought I was betraying their father. It stungthey made me feel guilty. Toms kids, on the other hand, were delighted and said they felt much better knowing someone was looking after their dad. All that was left was to tell Michelleand I procrastinated for weeks.

So, whens the big day? Michelle finally asked, after a long talk.

This Friday.

Well, what can I say? Blessings for your golden years, she finished curtly.

By Friday, Tom and I had bought a little spread, put on our best clothes, booked a cab, and went to the registry office. As we stepped out, I stopped dead in surprisethere were my daughters with their husbands and children, Toms family too, and, most incredibly, my sister! Michelle was there with a bunch of white roses, tears in her eyes but beaming.

Michelle! Did you really come all this way for me? I was stunned.

Well, someone had to see who you were running off with! she laughed.

Turns out theyd all been in on it, making plans and booking a table at a local café for us.

The other day Tom and I celebrated our first wedding anniversary. Hes now very much one of the family. And I still wake up not quite believing itso happy, it feels too good to be true.
