A Week Before Our Wedding, She Told Me She Didn’t Want to Get Married – Everything Was Paid For: The…

The wedding was only a week away when she told me she didnt want to marry. Everything had already been arranged and paid forthe venue, the paperwork, the rings, even part of the family celebration. For months I had been planning it all.

Throughout our relationship, I truly believed I was doing the right thing. I worked full time, yet every month Id set aside about a fifth of my wages for herwhether it was for the hairdresser, her nails, whatever she fancied. It wasnt because she didnt have her own jobshe did, and she spent her money however she pleased. I simply felt, as her partner, that it was my duty to take care of these things. I never asked her to chip in with bills. I always paid for our evenings out, dinners, trips to the pictures, even quick getawayseverything.

A year before the wedding, I did something rather big. I suggested we take her whole family to the seaside. Not just her mum, dad and brothers, but her nieces, nephewstwo cousins as well. There were a fair few of us. To afford such a trip, I put in extra hours at work, I gave up buying anything for myself, and I saved for months on end. When the time came, I paid for the lotthe accommodation, the train down, the food. She looked over the moon, and her family was ever so grateful. I had no idea then that, to her, it meant very little.

When she told me she wanted us to part ways, she said Id been too much. That I wanted too much love, too much attention, too much closeness. That I was keen to be affectionate, to message her, to check how she was. She told me shed always been rather reserved, and my way of caring smothered her. She said I expected things she couldnt give.

She also told me something shed never mentioned beforethat she never actually wanted to marry at all. Shed agreed only because Id pushed too hard. With her parents involved and a proposal in a restaurant in front of her family, she hadnt felt she could say no. What Id thought was a beautiful gesture was, to her, a trap.

Five days before the registry office ceremony, when all was set, she finally spoke the truth. She confessed shed always felt as though I was imposing a life upon her which she didnt desire. That Id done too much for her and it made her feel uncomfortable, in debt, tied down. Shed sooner leave than go through with something that didnt feel true to herself.

After that talk, she left. There were no raised voices, no trying to patch it up, no arguments. What remained were the contracts, the receipts, the careful plans, and one cancelled wedding. She held firm to her choice. That was the end of it.

Looking back now, that was the week I learned a hard lesson: being the man who sorts everything out, pays for everything, and is always therewell, it never guarantees that someone will want to stay with you.
