“If You Want to Place Him in a Children’s Home, I’ll Understand,” Said My Husband
I used to work as a shop assistant. One day, an elderly lady came into the shop, did her shopping, and then looked quite bewildered as she stared at her bags. I realised straight away that she wouldnt be able to carry everything home on her own.
How far away do you live? I asked her.
About three streets from here, she replied.
In that case, let me help you.
I closed up the shop, deciding to give up my break to help this lady. She turned out to be a truly lovely and warm-hearted person. She was seventy-eight years old and completely alone. Her son had died of cancer when he was young, and her daughter had gone off the rails long ago and didnt even remember her elderly mother. From that day on, we became friends.
I often popped round to see this sweet old lady. Wed have a chat over a cup of tea about life, Id help her out with the housework and try to cheer her up with some kind words.
Then, one day, I couldnt get in touch with her. I went to her house and knocked and knocked. Eventually, I heard a womans voice: Who are you? It was her neighbour.
Are you Emily? Her friend?
Yes
She passed away. She left you a note when they took her to hospital.
I slipped the note into my pocket and left, unable to read it straight away in the state I was in. Later, I told my husband what had happened, and together we decided to read through her letter.
Emily, youre my only support. Youre the only one I can ask a favour of. I have a granddaughtermy daughter lost all rights as a parent and the girl was placed in a childrens home. I used to visit her every weekend… If you dont mind, please visit her from time to time. Heres the numbercall, there is something waiting for you…
I dialled the number and arranged a visit. My husband came with me. To my surprise, the man we met was a solicitor. In his office, we learnt that the old lady had left me her flat in her will.
The next day, we decided to visit the granddaughter. The little red-haired girl, ten years old, won us over with her kindness, and we both immediately wanted to adopt her. Our own children were delighted with the idea.
Three years went by. My husband and I had a dreadful argument and he moved back in with his mother for a time. However, after a while, we made up.
The girl grew up, but she wasnt in any rush to move out to her grandmothers flat. We decided to let it out, which gave us some extra income. Our children, too, werent in a hurry to flee the nest.
One night, my husband was late home from work. When I heard the front door open, I ran to greet him. He wasnt alonehe was holding a small boy by the hand.
I can explain, he said.
Lets get everyone some supper, put the kids to bed, and then well talk, I told him.
Did this happen when you were living with your mother?
Yes. But you have to know, it was a mistakeIve only ever loved you. Id had far too much to drink. Somehow, it happened. Two days later I barely remembered any of it. Only today, social services got in touch. Turns out, shed had a son and kept it quiet all these years. She became an alcoholic, couldnt look after him, so she lost all her parental rights, and in the end, they tracked me down. If I refuse, hell end up in a childrens home. If you want, we can let that happenIll understand.
Of course, I couldnt let that happen. The boy looked just like my husband, so I forgave him and welcomed the child as my own. And thats how we live our lives now.
