You’re Released from Prison and Head to Your Grandmother’s House… Only to Discover a Little Girl Hiding a Dangerous Secret.

Published

on

You step out of prison, feeling the chill of freedom, and make your way to your grandmothers house. Just as youre taking it all in, you stumble upon a small, anxious-looking girl hiding away but you quickly realise shes clinging to a dangerous secret.

Suddenly, a group of men barge through the battered front door, boots caked in mud. You can almost hear Emily’s frightened gasp behind you.

Their drunken leader gives you a mocking smirk as he eyes your bright orange prison uniform. Fresh guard dog, eh? he sneers.

You stand firm, refusing to budge. This isnt your home. Time for you to go.

Lightning flashes overhead, casting shadows across the hallway. The intruder just laughs, shaking his head, and one of his crew tries to corner Emily.

Get her out, the leader snaps. Her mum owes us.

You find yourself repeating your grans words in your mind: be brave, always. And as the ringleader takes a threatening step closer, you react the slippery wooden floor is on your side as you swing him forcefully into the kitchen table.

Another thug lunges at you, but you shove him back. Run, you hiss to Emily, who bolts from the room.

The leader whips out a knife, but you twist his arm and send the blade clattering to the floor. Blood mixes with the rain pooling at the threshold. His mates drag him away, disappearing into the storm.

Afterwards, you track Emily down beneath an apple tree and guide her back inside. Theyll be back, she whispers anxiously.

You nod. Maybe. But next time, well be ready.

The two of you barricade the door, and you promise youll keep her safe.

Later that night, a loose floorboard gives up an old iron box. Inside: faded letters, a wad of pounds, and documents proof that a man called Arthur Finch had been threatening your gran over the land.

Emily recognises his name hes the one who drives that menacing black Land Rover through the village.

A neighbour quietly explains that Arthur took your gran away a few months back.

Then the local vicar, Father Thomas, brings forward documents showing Arthurs been swindling people in the area, and gives you a name a journalist in Oxford.

So you and Emily pack up and leave the village in an old pickup, but those black Land Rovers chase you on the M40. Somehow, you lose them.

When you finally make it to Oxford, you contact Harriet, the journalist. She inspects the evidence, frown deepening, and warns you that things are more dangerous than you realise.

Emily pores over the papers, jotting down names. Its clear that Arthur Finch is tied to land grabs and something even darker people trafficking.

Harriet knows times short. If youre going to act, it has to be now.

That night, you and Harriet, plus her photographer, sneak into an old warehouse while Emily waits, hidden. Police suddenly storm the building.

Inside, you spot Esperanza Emilys mum and come face to face with Arthur. Chaos erupts, but the police swarm in and arrest him. Emily and her mum are finally safe.

Back at the station, a detective tells you that the reason you’d been jailed was all a setup by Arthurs ring.

A few weeks later, Harriets investigation blows the whole network wide open and the operation falls apart.

You return to the village, which is no longer quiet or afraid. Marigold (grans friend) is safe, Julians been arrested, and Emily asks to stay; Esperanza gladly agrees.

Months roll by, and the house and garden slowly return to life. One evening, Esperanza sits you down.

You cant ever get those lost years back, she says softly, but you get to choose what happens next.

You look around at the rebuilt home, breathing in the peace, and reply, No more silence and no more forgotten children.

At last, you feel ready to start living for real.
