A Step Away from the Altar

A Step from the Altar

Sophie stood before the mirror in her bedroom, unable to take her eyes off her reflection. She turned this way and that, admiring how the soft ivory wedding gown flowed over her figure, the full skirt swaying gently with every movement. A delighted smile blossomed on her face. Lifting the hem and letting it fall, she imagined gliding down the aisle, every detail just as shed dreamed.

In the doorway appeared her older sister, Alice. Leaning against the frame with her arms folded, Alice watched Sophie with a slight smirk.

You do look beautiful, you know, she finally laughed. But honestly, youll need another dress for later. No way youll last through the evening in that puffy skirt. Picture the dancing, the meal, greeting all the guests Youll be sweltering and barely able to move by the end!

Sophie paused, considering her reflection more critically. She hadnt thought of that until now. The dress was perfect for the ceremony and photoselegant, classic, exactly what shed pictured for saying her vows. But for the reception and dancing with friends and family, perhaps something lighter would be best. Maybe a simple white dress, knee-length, easy to move in.

Really? Sophie frowned, flicking at the skirts layers. Well will you help me pick something out?

Of course, Alice replied with a knowing nod. I know you too wellyoud spend the whole day in the shop, trying on half the dresses in London, and end up leaving empty-handed! Im surprised you managed to get this one already.

Sophie shrugged, slightly embarrassed. Had it made bespoke from sketches. If Id gone to a bridal shop, Id probably still be there, surrounded by silk and lace and options. Its overwhelming!

She stepped away from the mirror and perched on the end of her bed, looking to Alice hopefully. Youre free tomorrow? Will you come shopping with me? Im completely lost otherwise.

Alice stepped closer, smoothing an invisible crease on Sophies dress, her smile warm. Ill drop everything for my favourite sister. You only get married oncelets find you the perfect dress for dancing!

That evening found Sophie at the kitchen table, surrounded by neatly stacked wedding invitations. Outside, twilight had set in, but the soft glow from the table lamp made the white cards shine. She bent over yet another invitation, carefully writing each guests name in her best letteringshed refused printed invitations for the personal touch a handwritten note would bring.

Her mum and Alice had tried to help at first, but Sophie insisted: Its my wedding! I have to do some things myself.

Just a few left, she muttered, gingerly flipping the next card. Her hand ached from hours of writing, fingers trembling from the unfamiliar effort. Honestly, Ive forgotten what its like to write so much by hand. My wrist is killing me.

Alice appeared in the doorway, silent for a minute as she watched Sophie at work. Then, she sauntered in and settled opposite her, crossing her legs and smiling slightly at her focused, soon-to-be-bride sister.

Let me help, please? Alice offered, leaning forward. Theres still a good stack left. And wheres James in all this? Youre inviting half his relatives too.

Sophie put down the pen, stretching her fingers with relief. Hes caught up with work, she sighed, glancing at the pile of finished cards. Trying to wrap everything up before the honeymoon. You know how it iscant leave loose ends behind.

A dreamy smile spread across Sophies face. Were hoping to get away after the wedding somewhere peaceful and warm, just to start married life with a fresh page.

He could at least sign a few invites, though, Alice replied, working to keep her tone neutral.

Secretly, Alice was uneasy about James and his distant approach to the wedding planning. Hed always seemed charming, but something in his manner unsettled hera sense that he wasnt truly invested. While Sophie glowed with excitement, Alice couldnt shake the feeling something was off.

Maybe its just me being overprotective, she tried to reassure herself. Not everyone shows their feelings so openly. Maybe hes just reserved.

Even so, the uncertainty gnawed at her. Shed watch James and get the sense he was drifting along, agreeing to whatever Sophie wanted without much conviction. Hed been the one to suggest marriage, after only a few months togethersuch a big step. He seemed enthusiastic enough, picking the venue, picking the guest list, insisting on a grand do so as not to leave anyone out.

My familys travelling the length of the country just to see this happen, hed say, reviewing the guest list. We cant let them down with anything less than spectacular, can we? Its our special day!

Sophie drank in his words, picturing every detail. She didnt notice when he fell silent mid-sentence or looked distant when the future came up. Alice watched with growing uncertainty. Sometimes, it felt as if James was just playing the part of the perfect fiancé; she wondered if he really grasped what hed taken on.

Could it just be nerves? Alice hoped so. A wedding is a big deal. But why cant I shake this feeling something isnt quite right?

She glanced at Sophie, still glowing as she sorted through menu choices and colour swatches. For now, supporting her sisters happiness was all that mattered. In time well, time would tell.

Sophie felt lucky the planning was going so smoothly. James had taken care of nearly all the big expensesbooking the elegant reception at a historic hall, hiring a professional photographer, arranging the honeymoon. For Sophie, it meant she just had to focus on herselfchoosing the dream dress, scheduling hair and makeup, organising little details. It was a relief, and she truly appreciated his commitment.

One evening, as the sisters nursed mugs of tea, Alices lingering concerns bubbled over.

Do you ever worry youre rushing into things? Alice asked softly, tracing her teaspoon around the cup. Youve not known each other that long Living together, dealing with ordinary life have you thought about maybe just living together for a while? You could always have the wedding in six months time.

Sophie didnt bristle. She knew Alice only ever brought these things up out of love. She smiled, her eyes sparkling with certainty.

Dont worry about me, Alice, she replied, gazing somewhere far beyond the kitchen. I love cooking, I love a tidy houseand anyway, if James is too busy, Ill manage. I can always get help if I need it.

She took a sip of tea, her voice more animated now. I really do love him. He makes me feel things Ive never felt before. Im not letting this chance slip by!

Alice nodded, hiding her reservations, seeing the way her sisters face truly lit up when she spoke about James. Maybe that was what real love looked likebarrelling past lifes practicalities on a wave of optimism.

Youre sure about him? Alice pushed gently.

I am, Sophie confirmed, steady as ever. Its not the amount of time, its the connection. We want the same thingsa real family together.

Alice just smiled, covering Sophies hand with her own. If youre happy, thats all I want.

Sophie squeezed her sisters hand gratefully. Thank you, Alice. I know youre worriedreally, I am happy. And I think this is only the beginning of something amazing.

Even Alice had to admit, James did romance beautifullybouquets of fresh flowers just because, sweet notes slipped into Sophies handbag, little surprises that would remind her of long-ago childhood treats. Her colleagues were astounded when coffee, exactly as Sophie liked it, arrived on her desk each morning, complete with a handwritten To the loveliest girl. Sophie would go pink with pleasure, delighted by the attention.

Every morning and evening, James drove her to and from work, opening the car door for her, taking her hand. Her colleagues marvelled, teasing her, Where did you find a chap like that?

Sophie only laughed, still half-surprised it was her living out the fairytale.

Watching her sisters whirlwind romance, Alice often wondered if she was just inventing trouble. James was attentive, caring, never missed a detail. Why couldnt she shake the vague cloud of unease, the fragile premonition that all might not be as perfect as it seemed?

Night after night, over tea, Alice hesitated, until finally she spoke her mind.

Hes wonderful, Alice admitted, but is it all a little too perfect? The gifts, the coffee, the flowers. Wonderful, yes, but look deeperhow does he act when something doesnt go to plan? Can you rely on him in a pinch?

Sophie frowned in thought, then smiled softly. Youre always so practical. Can we just enjoy what we have? I really am happy, Alice. I believe everything will be fine.

Alice exhaled and nodded. All right. Well see. I hope youre right.

Still, her instincts kept nagging. As much as she wanted to be wrong, that feeling gnawed away. And sure enough, trouble turned out to be just around the cornerworse than anything Alice had dared imagine.

Sophie arrived at James flat, brimming with happiness and carrying a folder of notesshe wanted to go through the final wedding details together, guest seating, the playlist, last-minute touches to the venue. She pictured them together, reviewing everything, sharing a laugh, ordering in pizza and spending a cosy evening in.

But she sensed tension as soon as she walked through the door. James didnt greet her with a hug or a smile; instead he stood with hands jammed in his pockets, staring into the distance. His expression was uncharacteristically hard, his eyes cold.

What do you mean, the weddings off? Sophie choked out, her legs threatening to collapse. Whats happened? James, youre so cold. Did I do something wrong? Please, say something.

He finally met her gaze, but instead of warmth there was only a sneering, bitter smile.

What you did? he said, voice flat. Nothing. Just happened to be born a woman, didnt you? You lot are all the samealways chasing better prospects. When something better comes along well, so much for loyalty. Im sick of it, honestly.

Sophie froze. Had she really heard that? Had she ever given him cause to think she wanted someone else? Her life, for months, had been all about him. Shed skipped outings with friends, adjusted all her plans, moved heaven and earth to make the wedding happen.

I dont understand, she whispered, gripping her folder so tightly her knuckles went white. Wheres this coming from? You know how I feel about you.

He scoffed, turning away. Do I? Youre like the restlaughed with other blokes, smiled when they walked past. Dont pretend I didnt see it.

A tightness gripped Sophies throat. She tried to argue, to explain. But it was as if another man stood before her: not the James who brought her coffee and flowers and made her laugh, but someone hollowed out by old hurt shed never suspected.

But I never she faltered.

No more excuses, he cut her off sharply. I thought you were different. Turns out youre just like everybody else.

She stood there helplessly, her mind spinning with questions. How could everything collapse in minutes? How did the man who once spoke such tender words now stand in front of her filled with resentment? Her whole world had centred on him, and suddenly a void yawned within her.

Her voice was little more than a whisper. I love you; theres no one else, she pleaded, knuckles digging into her fists as she quelled the trembling. Please believe me.

James looked up, pain flickering in his eyes, old and raw. He didnt seem to hear herhe was locked in the memory of someone elses betrayal.

I believed beforeonce, he spat bitterly. Spent a fortune, poured my soul into it and she dumped me at the altar. In front of half the village, too.

Young and hopeful then, James had poured everything into that day. The ring, the celebration, the plans for a future. And just as the vicar was about to begin, she smiled at him and said, Sorry. Ive changed my mind.

Hurts, doesnt it? he muttered bleakly, not seeing Sophie at all. Being left alone at the altar. At least Im sparing you the audience. Get out, will you? Im done.

The words stung like a slap. Sophie staggered back but straightened, finding no words, no strength left to fight. She turned quietly and walked out.

The door clicked shut, leaving James alone in silence. He sat heavily on the settee, burying his face in his hands, haunted by his own thoughts and that same old ache.

I probably ought to see someone about this, he thought, grimacing.

He had truly liked Sophiemore than that, even. But the closer they got, the more he saw her as someone else, someone whod wounded him deeply. The panic would rise every time he glimpsed the future with herfearing shed abandon him, just as before.

He pressed his palms to his eyes, desperate to chase away the memory.

With a shuddering breath, James reached for his phone. He scrolled through his contacts, then selected a number.

Helloits me, he said, fingers trembling. I need help. Im terrified its all going to happen again. I cant bear to be left like that. I need to sort this out.

A warm, calm voice answered. Im glad you rang. Lets work through it together. When can you come in?

James stared out at the dusky sky, replying quietly, Tomorrow, if I can.

***

A year later, Sophie stood in a sunlit hall, surrounded by friends and family. She wore that same wedding gown, delicate and graceful, with a light flow to the skirt and lace sleeves.

The music begansoft, sweet, enveloping. Sophie took Jamess hand and stepped onto the dance floor. He smiled faintly, pulling her close as they spun in time.

Well then, husband, she murmured, gazing into his eyes, How does it feel?

Strange, James answered, squinting slightly. Same as always and yet completely different.

Thats because this is real, she smiled. No more fear, no more what-ifs.

Her mind drifted back to that painful day, a year before, when Jamess words had shattered her. Shed thought her world was ending. But it was hitting rock bottom that gave her the strength to act.

The day after, shed gone back to Jamess flatnot to plead, but to talk honestly.

Im not going anywhere until we get to the bottom of this, shed told him, meeting his eyes without flinching. I know youre scaredscared of being hurt again. But we shouldnt destroy what we have because of the past. Lets face it together.

James had been silent for a long while, then admitted quietly, I just dont want to feel that pain again.

And I dont want you living in fear, Sophie replied. Lets find a way. Together.

Theyd begun seeing a counsellor. Bit by bit, James opened up about the old wound, the humiliation, the shame he still carried. Sophie stood by himnot judging, not pushing, just reminding him she was there, and he wasnt alone. She learned to understand his fears, and he learned to trust.

Now, husband and wife, they twirled beneath the sparkling lights, and Jamess eyes had lost their old wariness. There was only warmth, assurance, and gratitude.

You know, he whispered, gently squeezing her hand, Im so glad you didnt give up on me.

So am I, Sophie replied, nestling closer. Now Im sureour love is stronger than any fear.

The music faded, but their dance continuedsteadily, quietly, filled with that deep happiness which arrives only when two people find each other and face lifes hardships together.

**Sometimes, its when everything falls apart that we discover what really holds us togetherand the courage to build something stronger in the end.**As laughter swelled around them and glasses clinked, Sophie caught Alices eye across the room and beameda wordless thank-you passing between sisters. Later, as dusk flared into brilliant gold outside the windows, Sophie and James slipped away for a quiet moment in the garden. The scent of jasmine drifted by, and they walked hand in hand along the shadow-dappled path.

Promise me, James said, his voice softer than the breeze, that if the old fears come up again, youll remind me of this.

Sophie smiled, tucking her arm through his. Every single time, if you need me.

He let out a shaky laugh. I never imagined Id find someone strong enough to wait, patient enough to stay.

She stopped and turned to face him, her eyes bright and sure. We wait for the things worth waiting for. We mend what matters. Love isnt a fairytale; its a choice we make again and again.

He looked at her, seeing not the phantom of old heartbreaks but the certainty of hope. Well, then. Heres to choosing you, every day.

Sophie pressed her forehead to his. In the golden hush, nothing from before could reach them. Whatever the world had in storejoy, pain, all the rough edges and radiant high pointsthey would share it, no longer alone in their fears.

Inside, the music picked up, guests calling them back with cheerful shouts and clapping. Sophie laughed, letting herself be pulled into the warmth of family and old friends, Jamess hand firm in hers.

For a moment, she paused under the archway, looking back at the gardens, the place where her heart had once broken and slowly healed. Happiness, she understood, wasnt something found at the end of a story, but the quiet unfolding of every day after. She squeezed Jamess hand, and together, smiling, they stepped forwardone step from the altar, and then many, many more.
