Elephant Rescued After a Lifetime in Captivity — Lies Down on the Ground for the First Time in 80 Years
An elderly elephantess once named Somboon was taken from the wild as a youngster, snatched away from her true home and thrust into captivity. For decades, she was forced to spend her days on her feet, carrying tourists for money instead of living the gentle life nature intended for her. It was only this past year that her fortunes changedshe was rescued at last, and began the long journey to recovery.
It was time at last for Somboon to be properly cared for and allowed to rest, said the Save the Elephant Trust. We organised a rescue operation to ensure her protection and bring her to sanctuary.
In late January, Somboon was finally moved from the place where she had toiled all her life and was taken gently to the Shires Elephant Sanctuary. She arrived in a poor state; thin as a rail, her teeth worn away, and her hide dry and cracked from years of hardship. But now, she was safe at last, looked after by a team of dedicated experts who never left her side.
The staff at the sanctuary said that many rescued elephants arrive terribly wary, suffering from nerves and unable to trust almost anyone. Some are even too frightened to lie down and sleep, worried for their own safety. In Somboon’s case, little persuasion was neededeighty long years of standing without proper rest had exhausted her utterly.
After that first night of real, peaceful sleep, Somboon found herself unable to rise to her feet. The rescue team noticed at once and hurried to help. As she slowly grew accustomed to this new, gentle world, she was under constant care, and the sanctuarys workers did all they could to make her transition as easy as possible.
Somboon still faced a long road ahead to recover from the ordeals she endured for so many years. Yet, with the right nutrition, slow daily walks, and soothing mud baths, her strength gradually returned. At last, she could lead the kind of life she always deserveda life of peace, freedom, and quiet dignity.
