How a Grandmother Buried Her Newborn Grandson Beneath the Maternity Wing

Published

on

I was thinking about that old story the other day, and its still a proper tearjerker. Picture this: Margaret, whos just turned sixty, finally decides its time to call it a day at the hospital in Manchester. Shes not in any rush to retire, though she just wants a quiet evening. After her shift she swaps her scrubs for a sweater, grabs her bag and heads out into a proper downpour. No umbrella, of course, so she tucks the bag over her head and makes a beeline for the bus stop.

Out of nowhere a wail cuts through the rain. On a bench, cradled in a thin blanket, is a newborn, barely a few days old, shivering. Margaret scoops the little bundle up and tries to calm him. The mother, looking frantic, dashes back to her ward shes soaked through. She rings a paediatric emergency line, and a doctor swings by to check the tiny stranger.

Its a boy, about two weeks old, the doctor says, inspecting the pink cheeks. Hes healthy, just a bit damp. No idea why someone would leave him here, but hell need a loving family. Margaret decides to stay for the night shift anyway; she isnt planning on sleeping much anyway. Soon the police show up, asking for a statement, while Margaret keeps the baby snug against her chest, not letting go.

A couple of hours later the officers return, this time with a young married pair. The girl, Emily, is in tears, and the boy well, the baby cant even stand yet. Lets see if thats our little lad, Emily whispers, eyes wide.

They shuffle down the corridor to the maternity ward, and when Emily spots the infant she collapses into sobs, clutching him like hes the only thing that matters. Margaret watches, bewildered, until a police inspector steps in and lays it all out.

Sarah and Robert have been meeting in secret because Sarahs parents disapprove, he explains. Sarahs mum is determined to stop the match, even if it means making life hard for them. When the baby arrived, they hoped the grandmother would soften up, but instead Sarahs mother accused her of fattening the child and, in a fit of spite, let the couple out for a night at the cinema and then dumped the baby right under the maternity wards doors.

So thats the whole mess. It looks like that little boy may never get to know his grandmother again. Its a proper sad one, but it stuck with me the lengths people go to, and the unexpected kindness of a stranger who just happened to be in the right place at the right time.
