I Chose a “Down-to-Earth Girl” to Spite My Wealthy Parents—But She Was Hiding a Secret So Shocking It Turned My World Upside Down…
I chose an ordinary girl to annoy my wealthy parents but she held a secret so immense, it swept the rug out from under me…
Diary Entry
If Im honest, I never imagined it would turn out this way. At the start, I was hardly noble. This wasnt about love or finding a real partner. All I really wanted was to give my parents a taste of their own medicine.
Heres the truth: Ive always lived as I pleased, never giving much thought to consequence. Parties in London, weekends in Brighton, fast cars, and quick getaways to Europe. After all, my family is pretty well-off, and Ive always known Id inherit the family firm one day.
Then came the dreaded serious chat.
My father leaned across the old mahogany table in the study. Look, Oliver, he said in that low, commanding tone, your mother and I think its time for you to grow up.
I almost laughed. Grow up? Are you saying its time for me to settle down to get married?
Precisely, he replied, holding my gaze. Youre nearly thirty, and if you want to take over the company, we need to see youre responsible. That means a wife and a home. You cant run the business the way you carry on now.
My mum gave me a solemn look. Your father built this from nothing, Oliver. We cant hand it over to someone who treats life like one big joke.
I was furious. If they wanted a wife, Id give them one. If they thought they could control me, Id prove otherwise. I decided to bring someone home whod make them rethink this whole scheme.
Thats how I met Emily.
She was nothing like the girls from my usual social circle. I first spotted her at a small charity event in Oxford, quietly tidying up at the end. She looked almost mousy, in a plain dress with her hair pulled back. No designer shoes, no gold or diamondsjust an air of calm and, oddly, authenticity.
When I approached her, she simply nodded. Nice to meet you, Oliver. Barely spared me a glance, as if I was just another guest.
So, where are you from, Emily? I asked, trying to make small talk.
Oh, just a little town outside Bath, she replied with a gentle smile. Nothing remarkable. Her voice was soft, her gaze careful.
Brilliant.
So, Emily, I steered the conversation, whats your view on marriage?
She arched an eyebrow. Excuse me?
I grinned, banking on my charm. I know its odd, but Im looking for someone to marry. I have my reasons. But youll have to pass a few tests first.
She gave a small laugh. Well, thats a first, she said, giving me a look I couldnt quite decipher. Its funny, I was just considering whether I should try marriage myself.
Really? I said. So about this arrangement?
She studied me coolly, then shrugged. Alright, Oliver. On one condition.
Whats that?
No questions about my past. Lets keep it simple. Just say Im a girl from a small townthats all they need to know. Deal?
I beamed. Deal.
Introducing Emily to my parents was a masterstroke. Mums eyebrows shot up at Emilys modest dress and no-nonsense manner. Even my father couldnt hide his surprise.
Oh Emily, is it? Mum asked, managing a tight smile.
Dad frowned deeply. Oliver, this isnt exactly what we expected.
You wanted me to settle, I told them brightly. And Emilys perfect for me. Shes genuine, gentle, and doesnt give a fig for all this luxury.
Emily played her part perfectlyevery polite answer, every wry glance at dull dinner conversation. My parents squirmed with every passing moment.
Yet something about her nagged at me. She played the role superbly, but at odd times I caught a look in her eyealmost as if she was having fun at my expense.
Are you sure you want this, Oliver? she asked one evening after another stilted meal with my family.
More than ever, I chuckled. Theyre losing patience, Emily. Its working.
She tilted her head, voice unusually soft. Well, Im glad I could help.
I was so caught up in my parents reactions that I barely noticed Emilys own feelings.
Then came the annual charity gala my parents hosted in Mayfaircrystal chandeliers, endless white linen, the works.
Emily entered with me by her side, her simple sundress standing out amid the sea of ballgowns and pearls. It was everything I could have wished for.
Just remember, I whispered, tonights the final test.
She looked up, unfazed. I know what to do.
She stayed quietly polite, smiling softly, engaging just enough. I saw Mum and Dad watching her with growing discomfort, but they kept their comments to themselves.
Then, completely out of the blue, the Lord Mayor strolled over with a huge grin.
Emily! What a delight! he exclaimed, shaking her hand warmly.
Mum and Dad nearly lost their composure. How on earth did the Lord Mayor know Emily?
Emily returned the Mayors greeting with polite (but slightly flustered) grace. Lovely to see you, sir.
You know, people still talk about that youth centre your family helped build in Birmingham, he said. Your support truly made a difference.
Emily nodded. Im very pleased to hear that. We only wanted to be useful.
He left us, leaving a stunned silence at our table. At last, Mum spoke up. Oliver what on earth was that about?
Before I could answer, an old family friend, Roger, appeared and stared in shock. Emily! I didnt know youd come back!
Emily only smiled briefly. Didnt tell many. Im only here for my wedding, she said, eyes twinkling.
Roger glanced at me, laughing. Oliver, youre marrying EmilyThe Charity Princess? Her family are among the leading philanthropists in all of England!
Suddenly my mouth went dry. Id heard the nickname beforeeveryone in our circles had. Id just never put two and two together.
Later that evening I pulled Emily aside. So, Charity Princess?
She sighed. Yes. My family runs one of the largest foundations in Britain. But Ive tried to keep out of the limelight.
Why didnt you tell me?
For the same reason you kept your scheme from me. I had my reasons, too.
Did you know all along this was a ruse? I pressed.
She nodded. I got tired of my parents pushing me into marriages for the sake of power. I wanted to make my own choice. When I met you, I saw a way we could help each other.
I looked at her properly for the first time. She wasnt some humble nobody. She was strong, sharp, and resolute.
As I played games, shed given up her name just to live on her own terms. Shed agreed to my plan to break out of her own cage.
One evening as we were planning the next event, I just sat in silence, watching her.
What? she asked.
I never realised how strong you are, I said quietly. Youre handling all of this better than I ever could.
She smiled gently. Im not doing it for them. Im doing it for myself.
In that moment, everything shifted. What began as a joke was becoming real. I found myself admiring her. I wanted her by my side.
Emily, I said, maybe its time we told them the truth.
She agreed. We were finished pretending.
The next day we sat our parents down. As I got ready to explain everything, I felt an unexpected calm. I wasnt afraid anymore. I just knew I was readyto be honest, and to move forwardwith Emily beside me.
