My son‑in‑law threatens: I won’t see my daughter unless I sell my mother’s house.

I had spent half a decade drifting alone. No, Id once been married, but my husband vanished from the family a year after the wedding, just as I was cradling a newborn daughter in my arms. In the end, Peter left us a threebedroom flat in Manchester at least hed done the decent thing, however briefly. I swore I would never walk down the aisle again. And I wasnt the marrying type to begin with.

Emily grew up under my roof, and I had to get her on her feet. The chores piled up until they were choking me. I knew I was giving my all, yet I could not provide the fathers steady shoulder Emily still seemed to need. I could not add that missing piece any longer. So, as time slipped by, my daughter started clinging fiercely to every lad she befriended or dated. Not everyone appreciated such clinginess. I found myself soothing Emily, mending her broken heart again and again. Yet the good Lord, in his own way, sent her a husband.

Daniel Wood was practical and kind, and I was simply eager for Emily to marry him. He treated both me and Emily with respect. What more could a mother ask for? I thought of him as the perfect soninlaw. But fairy tales, I learned, rarely stay sweet. Six months after the wedding, Daniel changed.

Meanwhile, I was caring for my own mother, Ethel, who was still alive. Shed given birth early, just like I had with Emily, and shed even seen her own granddaughter. Then, all of a sudden, Mom fell ill. Exhaustion took hold of her, and I was forced to bring the frail old lady into my flat, tending to her day after day. There was nowhere else for her to go, so she lived with me. That idea, however, made Daniels blood run cold.

What sparked his outrage, I could not fathom. I never forced him to look after the old woman; all the burdens landed squarely on my shoulders. Ethel was not a demanding patient, mind you. I still didnt understand what had upset my soninlaw.

Soon, things only grew darker. Emily drifted onto Daniels side, and they began to avoid me. Once we shared meals around the same table; now the children hid behind their bedroom doors. I tried to talk to Emily, but she stayed silent, offering only excuses.

They didnt comfort me with visits from the grandchildren either. Theyre living for themselves, not in a rush, theyd say. At first I pressed, then I stopped. Their affairs were theirs to sort. Yet Daniel began to tighten his grip on me, as if the house were his domain. He never lifted a finger to repair the leaking roof or buy a new kettle, but he would disappear nightly with friends to clubs. I could not locate the charming soninlaw I had once admired.

It seemed his true nature had finally emerged.

Each week Daniel grew more unbearable. Then New Years Eve arrived, and he refused to celebrate with us. He whisked Emily away to a separate room, and they toasted apart from the rest of us and my mother. At midnight, Emily stepped out to wish us well, while Daniel didnt even turn his head.

The following morning he announced, Emily and I are selling your mothers house and buying a flat of our own. I was at a loss for words. After all, they had been living in my flat for six months on my dime. Was that not enough?

No, I snapped. Earn your own place. This is my mothers home. We wont sell it. It belongs to her, and shell decide what to do with it.

Daniels face hardened. That very day he packed his bags, took Emily, and drove off to his parents house.

It was sad that Emily didnt protest a word, but it was her life. If she believed shed be happier there, then let her live with Daniel.

Had I acted rightly?

What would you have done in my place?
