Over the Weekend, I Invited My Old School Friends to My New Home—Ten Years of Hard Work, No Holidays…

Published

on

So, over the weekend I invited my old school friends round to my new place. I cant tell you how excited I was. Getting that house took me the better part of ten yearsten years of hard work, no holidays, still driving the same worn-out car but at long last, I did it.

I fired up the barbecue, bought the lager I knew they loved, and honestly, I thought wed have the best time, just soaking up the good vibes. But as soon as they arrived, the energy feltwell, off. You know those moments when the mood feels heavy, almost awkward?

I walked them through the house, waiting for a well done, mate or a pat on the back. But instead, I got comments like:
Blimey, its a bit out of the way, isnt it? Dont you get fed up with the traffic?
And:
The gardens a bit on the small side. At mine I could probably fit a pool out the back! (bear in mind, hes only renting his place).
Someone even said, half-joking:
Lets hope you keep your job, that mortgage must be brutal.

They ate, they drank and left before things properly kicked off. As soon as I closed the door behind them, I was just hit by this awful emptinessalmost like guilt for having made it.

I rang my dad the next day and told him what had happened. He just laughed and shared something that totally shifted how I look at people. He goes:
Son, ever watch crabs in a bucket? When one tries to crawl out, the others dont helpthey just pull him straight back down.

Suddenly it all made sense. My mates arent bad people. My little win just highlights where they feel stuck in themselves. To them, my new home isnt a victory. Its an uncomfortable reminder of what theyve not managed to do.

A week later I had James round. I only met him a couple years back through work, and honestly, hes got three times the money Ive managed. When he walked through the front door, his face honestly lit uphe squeezed me into a bear hug and said, Absolutely brilliant, mate! You smashed it! Youve got to tell me how you pulled this offIm genuinely impressed.

There was no jealousy, not an ounce of it.
He was inspired.

Heres the harsh truth, really:
Youve got to pay attention to who doesnt clap for you when you win. Some people love you, but only when youre not moving aheadbecause it lets them feel comfortable. When you start to grow, you lose friends. Thats the price of getting somewhere.

But dont feel guilty.
You havent lost friendsyouve dropped a weight.
Stick with those who celebrate your winsbecause their own light shines bright enough that your success doesnt leave them in shadow.
