“That’s Not How Things Go in Real Life…”

Published

on

This isnt how these things go…
Yet his confidence has faded, leaving his words thin in the air.
The girl doesnt blink, her gaze fixed, unflinching.
Count with me
Her voice, a delicate thread, barely a whisper
yet it slices through the hushed room.
A soft scoff drifts from somewhere behind
Shes just playing
No one chuckles this time.
Ethan lets out a shaky breath
part sceptical, part uneasy amusement.
alright then.
A pause.
The girls grip tightens gently.
One
A hush settles over the table.
Thick. Tense.
A heartbeat thrums in Ethans ears.
Two
He shiftsjust a fraction
a flicker of uncertainty crossing his face
what
His foot
moves.
Almost imperceptible.
But, unmistakably, it moves.
The tables chatter ceases.
Wine glasses freeze in wait.
Eyes widen.
Ethan turns rigid.
no
His breath falters.
The girl presses on.
Three
There it is again
more pronounced now.
His hand clamps the chair, his knuckles bloodless.
what have you done?
Now his voice trembles.
Genuine fear, tinged with fragile hope.
The girl leans in, gentle and composed.
I havent done a thing
A heavy pause.
he said youd feel it when the time was right.
A silence thick enough to drown in.
Colour drains from Ethans cheeks.
Recognition dawning
something ancient and raw.
His grip relaxes
then steels once more.
who told you that?
The girl meets his gaze, steady and clear.
No doubt.
My father.
His heart lurches
quicker, louder
Ethans breathing stops.
thats not possible
She slides her hand calmly into the pouch of her oversized jumper.

No drama.

No rush.

As if shes always known this moment would come.

Around them, the restaurant holds its breath inside a velvet quiet.

Crystal chandeliers shimmer gently above tables set for more elegant evenings.

Nobody dares speak.

Nobody moves.

Ethan stares at the child by his side
pulse banging wildly in his head.

She draws out a photograph, carefully folded.

Worn thin at the creases.

Tended for too many years.

She holds it out to him in both hands.

Mum said youd never believe me without proof.

Ethans hands shake as he takes it.

The instant he looks down,
the world seems to slip sideways.

Because there he is.
Younger.
Laughing.
Beside a dark-haired young man with an arm slung round his shoulders.

His brother.

Daniel Cross.

Alive and smiling at the camera.

Between them
an infant bundled in a pale blanket.

The girl.

Ethans jaw falls slack.

No

His voice splinters.

Because Daniel died twelve years ago.

A collision.

A closed casket.

Rain hammering the roof of the church.

Ethans mind replays it all.

Or at least

the story as he was told it.

The girls eyes flicker over him, as if shes worried hope might be a crueller torment than loss.

He didnt die straight away, she murmurs.

Her words echo through the room.

Ethans gaze struggles upwards.

What?

She swallows hard.

Mum was the nurse on duty that night.

A sharp exhale trembles over someones lips nearby.

She told me your family gave money so the room would stay private.

Ethans hands begin to tremble violently.

Because suddenly
he remembers something.

Fragments only.

His father barring him from the hospital room.

Lawyers bustling in and out.

Signatures demanded when he was numb.

And Daniels wife vanishing quietly after a fortnight.

The girls voice is brittle now, too.

But, before he passed

She gestures at Ethans legs, her motion careful.

he told Mum something odd.

Ethans lungs barely draw air.

Tears glisten in the girls eyes.

He said your legs werent truly damaged.

The room falls utterly silent.

Ethans foot tenses
the twitch stronger this time.

Like a sleeping limb reluctantly waking after years.

His voice cracks.

What did he mean?

The girl inches closer, then speaks a line that empties every breath from the room:

He said your brother caused the crash.

Her gaze lifts to the secluded balcony above.

because he needed you in that wheelchair.

Every head turns upward.

And there
shadowed by the marble balustrade
stands Marcus Cross.

Impeccable suit.

Impeccable poise.

Face ghastly white.

The very moment Ethan sees him

he just knows.

Not by facts.

Not by law.

Not even by memory.

But in the deep, tangled place where dread and knowing reside

he understands.

The girl closes trembling fingers around Ethans hand.

Then she whispers:

My dad told me

Fresh tears roll down her cheeks.

the very first thing youd get back wouldnt be your legs.

Ethan stares up at his brother.

Horror tightens its hold on him, icy and absolute.

And the girls last words are gentle, barely more than breath:

It would be the truth.

And so, in that silent moment, Ethan understands:
sometimes, what sets us free is not what we wish for,
but what we desperately need
the power of truth to loosen the shackles that even love or hope could not.
