They tumbled away like snowballs, my husband threw them out.

This happened last summer on a Friday. My husband was at work, so my daughter and I decided to go shopping at the local market.

After picking up the groceries, we walked home together.

When we got back, we settled into our usual chores my daughter started tidying up while I got busy cooking.

Suddenly, I heard the screech of brakes outside. Our distant relatives had arrived unexpectedly. My cousin, her husband, and their fifteen-year-old daughter.

I welcomed them into our home and quickly set the table. Curious, I asked what had prompted their visit. It turned out that yesterday had been my cousins birthday, and they had decided to drop by and celebrate.

As you can imagine, I wasnt at all prepared for guests. While they were enjoying a cup of tea, I phoned my husband to explain the situation. He suggested we have a barbecue, mentioning that we happened to have some pork in the freezer perfect for grilling.

I went in to tell our guests I hadnt been expecting anyone, but Id sort out the barbecue wed marinate the meat and it would be ready in an hour or two, just in time for my husbands return from work.

They nodded in agreement, then sprawled out on our sofa and switched on the television.

I admit, I was a little taken aback by this. Hoping for help, I asked my cousins husband if he could assist me with cutting the meat. He replied that his hand was aching, and my cousin muttered that she felt unwell after the journey. She turned away and focused on the TV.

Resigned, I busied myself with preparing and marinating the meat. In the end, my daughter and I did everything setting the table and getting everything ready, with no offer of help from our guests.

When my husband came home, I explained what had happened. He was astonished and remarked that my relatives had some nerve. He called everyone to the table for the meal.

Dinner was painfully silent. My cousins husband grabbed three skewers as soon as they were served and devoured the food greedily. My husband glanced at me, clearly displeased with the whole affair.

Once wed finished eating, I asked if anyone would help with the washing up, hoping for a little consideration. But my cousin replied that she couldnt, because of her manicure, and her daughter was apparently unable to wash dishes as well.

Then, they announced that it was too late to drive home and that they would stay the night not only that, but they needed to sleep in our bed, as my cousins husband required a firm mattress for his bad back.

At that moment, my husband had had enough. He lost his temper and snapped:

Do you think this is a hotel and were your staff? Right, pack your things and leave immediately!

I was stunned. I tried to calm him down, but our relatives didnt wait for any more words. They dashed out of the house, jumped in their car, and sped away.

By the end of it all, my family and I sat together and realised something important: kindness doesnt mean allowing others to take advantage of you. Boundaries matter, and true family helps each other and sometimes, standing up for yourself is the most valuable lesson of all.
