We Had High Hopes My Mom Would Retire, Move to the Countryside, and Leave Her Three-Bedroom Flat to Me and My Husband!

Oh, we had such high hopes that my mum would retire, move to the countryside, and leave her three-bedroom flat to me and my husband!

Let me tell you about my neighbour, Lucille. Shes 68 now and lived alone in her lovely three-bed. Recently, she rented out her flat and went off travellinggood for her!

Then her daughter, Alice, came round to moan about it:
*What on earth is Mum playing at? Shes really let me down! Now my mother-in-laws having a go at me, saying Ill turn out just as daft when Im olderyou know, the apple doesnt fall far from the tree. And me and my husband just took out a loan for a new car! Were already two months behind on payments. We were counting on Mum to help us out, but instead, shes gone and rented out her place to swan off on holiday!*

I just stared at Alice, baffledwhy should her mum be responsible for their car loan? But she carried on:
*My mother-in-laws furious were still living in her house while Mums off gallivanting with her flat sitting empty!*

Now, I get that Alice wanted sympathy, but honestly? I think Lucille did the right thing. Shes earned the right to live how she wants. Why should anyone assume that just because a woman retires, she has to spend the rest of her days babysitting her kids and grandkids? Thats not fair! So I asked Alice:

*Why dont you and your husband stand on your own two feet? Why didnt you spend the last 15 years saving up for your own place? Then your mother-in-law wouldnt be giving you grief.*

Alice just sighed and said, *We were so sure Mum would retire to the countryside and hand over her flat to us!*

Well, I couldnt resist teasing her a bit. *What if Lucille goes and gets married again? Shes got that friend who went on holiday to Spain, met a bloke, and ended up moving there with him. Maybe Lucillell do the same!*

Alice looked at me like Id grown another head. But honestly, I saw Lucilles photos onlineshes having the time of her life, relaxing and enjoying herself. Good on her! Age shouldnt stop anyone from being happy or trying new things. Shes earned this.
