Across the diner, the man in the red polo shirt spun around, his eyes scanning the tables with sudden panic when he realized the child was no longer where he had told her to wait. His frantic gaze locked instantly onto Wyatt’s booth. Wyatt didn’t give him a chance to think. He stood up slowly, drawing his towering six-foot-four frame to its full height. The heavy leather of his riding vest groaned, and his boots hit the floorboards with a heavy thud that made the entire room go dead silent.

“”You and I need to have a little chat,”” Wyatt rumbled, his voice vibrating through the small diner.

Behind his back, the little girl hid her face against his jacket. But as her tiny fingers clutched the rough leather, her eyes caught the massive, intricate patch embroidered across the center of his back—a Midnight Raven with wings spread wide and piercing ruby eyes. The child froze, her breath catching in her throat. She gently traced the thick crimson threads, and the sheer terror in her eyes suddenly shattered, replaced by a wave of breathless relief.

“”Mommy told me…”” she whispered, her voice suddenly alive with a desperate, unyielding hope. “”She told me if I was ever scared or in danger, and I saw a man with the midnight raven on his back… I should run to him as fast as I could. She said he is family, and he would never let anyone hurt us.””

Wyatt felt his heart slam against his ribs like a sledgehammer. He partially turned his head toward her, his rough voice cracking with an emotion he hadn’t felt in a decade. “”What’s your mama’s name, little one?””

The girl looked at the man by the counter, who was now slowly backing toward the glass door, and whispered, “”Grace.””

Wyatt snapped his gaze back to the stranger, his eyes narrowing into slits of pure fury. The man tried to force a confident, arrogant smile onto his face, raising his hands defensively as he took a cautious step backward. “”Look, big guy, you’re getting the wrong idea here. Her mother gave the kid to me for the week. Said she was tired of being a parent, wanted to run off to Las Vegas, and just walked away.””

“”He’s lying!”” the little girl cried out, bravely peeking from behind Wyatt’s broad shoulder. “”He tricked Mommy! He told her our tire pressure sensor was flashing and made her get out to check the rear wheel at the old desert crossroads. Then he locked the doors from the inside, grabbed her purse and phone from the seat, and drove away with me! He left Mommy all alone in the blistering sun with no water!””

The atmosphere in the diner instantly turned heavy enough to suffocate. Four other large men in leather vests rose from their tables in perfect unison, abandoning their meals without a word. The glass door rattled as two more bikers stepped inside from the dusty twilight, crossing their massive arms and completely sealing off the only exit. The trap had snapped shut.

Wyatt reached into the inner pocket of his vest and pulled out an old silver Zippo lighter with the exact same raven motif engraved on the casing. He flicked it open, showing it to the little girl. The child touched the cold metal, fresh tears of joy spilling over her lashes. “”Yes! That’s Mommy’s favorite lighter!””

Wyatt turned his gaze back to the stranger, who was now pressed flat against the wooden counter, his face pale and sweating, with absolutely nowhere left to run. Wyatt’s voice was colder than a grave. “”Grace is my little sister. And you just ran completely out of road.””

The little girl tugged Wyatt’s vest once more, pointing urgently toward the dark highway. “”Uncle, we have to hurry… she’s still out there in the dark, trying to walk through the desert road…”””
