Marcus’s superior smirk didn’t just fade; it eroded into his skin. Every drop of color drained from his face so quickly that his complexion took on the dull, leaden tint of the storm clouds gathering over the lake. His hand froze instantly on the fabric of the booth.

“”What sort of game is this, Iris?”” Marcus stammered, his voice dropping an octave as his fingers fumbled blindly for the sleek smartphone resting beside his crystal glass. “”What kind of joke are you playing?””

“”It is not a joke, Marcus,”” Iris said, her voice smooth, level, and entirely devoid of the tears he had spent the last three months trying to violently provoke. “”It is a board-level termination.””

Before his thumb could even hit the biometric scanner, the screen of his phone woke up, detonating a rapid succession of crimson system alerts. The main private banking application flashed a harsh, text-only banner: Corporate Account Balance: $0.00. Credit Line: Disconnected. A sharp, aggressive vibration from his smartwatch followed a split second later, displaying an urgent dispatch from the executive committee of Vance Logistics. The subject line read: Immediate Cessation of Duties, Asset Repossession, and System Lockout.

“”This… this is completely impossible,”” Marcus whispered, his breathing turning shallow and frantic as he stood up so abruptly he jarred the heavy table, nearly knocking over his wine. “”The Chairman signed my funding extension at the downtown branch yesterday morning. I saw the cryptographic validation myself!””

“”The Chairman executes every signature anonymously through the trust’s encryption portal, Marcus,”” Iris said, leaning back comfortably against the leather cushions, her fingers tracing a slow, protective circle over her stomach. “”Which is why you never bothered to read the secondary corporate bylaws. You never asked why my mother’s maiden name was listed as the sole proprietor on the original holding company charter.””

The entire rooftop terrace seemed to shrink into a tight, stifling witness box. The neighboring tables of tech executives and corporate lawyers had fallen completely silent, their attention locked onto the prominent young director staring at his phone in an unmasked, sweating panic. Serena’s smug expression vanished in an instant; her hand dropped from his shoulder as if he had suddenly become contagious, her eyes wide as she read the red failure alerts flashing across his wrist.

For six months, Marcus had managed his marriage like a minor bookkeeping error, draining the development capital of the trust to fund luxury high-rise leases and diamond necklaces for his mistress, utterly convinced that his executive title made him untouchable. He had assumed Iris’s quiet, solitary evenings at home were the result of defeat, entirely unaware that she spent those midnight hours auditing his expense reports from the encrypted terminal in the library.

“”Iris, wait,”” Marcus begged, his high-society accent completely splintering as he took a desperate, uncoordinated step toward her side of the table. “”The baby… the legacy. We can handle this privately. We don’t need to involve the regulators or the executive committee.””

“”The committee has already concluded the vote, Marcus,”” Iris said, standing up slowly and smoothing down the front of her dark dress. “”And the facility security team is currently clearing your personal desk into a cardboard box on the pavement outside the building.””

She didn’t wait for his breath to return, nor did she spare a single glance at Serena, who was already frantically slinging her purse over her arm and slipping toward the service elevator without looking back. Iris walked calmly past her husband toward the private elevator where her driver was already waiting, leaving Marcus standing entirely exposed next to a half-cut dessert, as the waiter approached with the final, un-subsidized bill.”
