He Refused to Marry His Pregnant Girlfriend. His Mother Agreed, but His Father Stood Up for Their Unborn Child.

The air was thick with tension as Thomas stepped into the dimly lit cottage, his father, Arthur, pausing mid-motion by the hearth. The words tumbled out before Thomas could steady his voice.

“Dad, theres news. The neighbours girlEmilyshes pregnant. Its mine.”

Arthur set down his pipe, eyes darkening. “Then marry her.”

“Are you mad? Im barely out of school! This isnt the time for a familywe werent even serious!”

“Serious?” A bitter laugh escaped Arthurs lips. “Old enough to chase her, but not to face what youve done? Right.” He called sharply over his shoulder, “Margaret! Come here.”

Margaret wiped her flour-dusted hands on her apron as she entered, frown deepening. “Whats this about?”

“Our boys got Emily next door with child, and now he wont do right by her.” Arthurs jaw tightened.

Margaret barely blinked. “And hes right not to. Why shackle himself to the first girl who traps him? These modern lasses know what theyre aboutfind a lad with prospects, forget precautions, then demand a ring. And whos to say the babes even his? Make her take the test. Besides, Thomas is young. Hes a manits not as if he could help himself. But we wont raise another mans mistake.”

Arthur exhaled slowly. “And if it *is* his?”

“So what? Are we bound to clean up his mess? Let the test decide.” She turned on her heel, leaving Arthur alone with his son.

“I was young once too,” Arthur murmured, staring into the fire. “Fancied one girl, married another. Not for lovefor duty. Being a man isnt just about passion, Thomas. Its choices. Consequences. Your mother was expecting when I wed her. Didnt know if I could love her but the child? That wasnt their fault. My blood. My conscience. And mark thisIve never regretted staying.”

Three months later, the DNA test lay between them like an accusation: 99.9% certainty. Thomas was the father.

“Well?” Margaret snapped as Arthur slid the paper toward her. “So its his. Doesnt mean that Emily sets foot in this house. I wont have it!”

Thomas sat rigid, fists clenched, avoiding his fathers gaze. The choice was written in the set of his jawhe stood with his mother.

Arthur rose slowly, voice quiet but unshaken. “Since youve made your decision, hear mine. While I live, my grandchild will want for nothing. Ill buy land, build a homeeverything Ive earned goes to him. As for you two? Youll get no more from me. I wont be party to this shame. Thomas, from today, youre no son of mine. Not a penny of mine will touch your hands. It all goes to the boy.”

Margaret lunged forward. “Have you lost your mind? Disowning your own flesh and blood?!”

Arthur didnt answer. He strode out, her curses chasing him into the night. Thomas stood frozen, the weight of his fathers words pressing downknowing, with cold certainty, that Arthur never spoke in vain.
