Stay Still, Say Nothing, You’re in Danger: The Young Woman Without…

Published

Stay still, dont say a word, youre in danger. The ragclad girl with tangled hair and grimestreaked cheeks dragged the billionaire into a shadowy alcove and pressed her lips to his just to keep him alive and that was the start of it all.

Stay still. Dont say a word. Youre in danger.

Those words sliced through the night like a knife. Ethan Cross, chief executive of CrossTech Industries, froze. Just seconds earlier hed stepped out of his car onto a dim back lane behind The Savoy, trying to dodge the swarm of photographers waiting up front. Now a dishevelled teenager, hair in knots and face smeared with dirt, was pulling him into the darkness.

Before he could even ask, shed already pressed her mouth to his.

For a heartbeat everything stopped the scent of rain, his trembling hands on his shirt collar, the distant hum of traffic all melted into a hushed silence. Then a black sedan roared past the lane, windows tinted, lights off. A man leaned out a window, scanning the street. Ethans pulse hammered. Whoever they were, they were hunting him

The girl barely twenty, wearing a torn hoodie slipped away first.

Youre safe now, she whispered. Youd have spotted me if youd lifted your head.

Ethan blinked, stunned. Who are you?

It doesnt matter, she said, stepping back. You shouldnt be out here alone tonight.

He could have walked away, but the calm, firm tone in her voice even in the chill made him stay. Did you know I was being followed?

I notice things, she replied simply. When you live on the streets you learn to watch before you move.

Her name, he learned later, was Poppy Hart. Shed been roughsleeping by the station for two years, and that night shed saved the life of one of the richest men in London.

Ethan, however, wasnt the type to let debts go unpaid. That night wasnt the end of their story it was the beginning.

Three days later he tracked her down again. He put his security team on her trail, which wasnt easy: Poppy stayed off the radar, sleeping in a different spot each night. When he finally spotted her outside a community centre, she looked smaller than he remembered, but her eyes sharp, grey, steady met his instantly.

I told you not to follow me, she snapped.

You saved my life, Ethan said. At least let me thank you.

She didnt want his money. People like you give money to feel better about yourselves. I dont want charity.

Then work for me, he offered. Youve got instincts most dont.

She laughed, a sharp, humorless chuckle. You want to hire a homeless girl who sleeps under bridges?

Yes, Ethan said simply.

It took weeks, but she grudgingly took a temporary spot on his security team. At first the staff resented her. A woman with no background check, no degree, no fixed address didnt belong in their world. Yet Poppy had something they lacked: instinct. She could sense when something was off a stranger lingering too long, a car parked too close.

Soon Ethan realised she wasnt just keeping him safe; she was showing how blind hed become. You live behind a glass pane, shed said once. People see you, but you dont see them.

He started listening to her, to her team, even to the city that had built his empire. As weeks passed his admiration deepened. Theyd share latenight coffees in his office, their laughter echoing off the windows. She never flirted, but when she smiled he forgot how much power he wielded and how little it mattered.

Then, one night, the same black sedan rolled up outside her flat. This time the target was Poppy. The bullet meant for Ethan hit her instead.

In a flash, a crack like breaking glass, the security team tackled the shooter before he could get away. Ethans eyes were fixed on Poppy collapsing onto the marble floor, blood blooming on her sleeve.

Stay with me, he said, pressing his hand to the wound. Her eyes flickered, confused yet calm. I guess I cant stay away from trouble, she whispered weakly.

The hospital lights seemed endless. Hours passed before a doctor emerged, saying shed live just barely. Ethan stayed outside her room all night, the words hed once spoken circling in his head: You live behind a glass pane. Hed built walls of money and reputation to keep the world out; shed shattered them with a single kiss.

Five weeks later, when Poppy finally opened her eyes, Ethan was there. Youre fired, he said softly, regaining his composure.

She rolled her eyes. You cant fire yourself. I made you head of my personal security.

Youre impossible, he muttered.

Maybe. But I owe you my life, twice over.

While she recovered, Ethan quietly arranged a modest flat for her, a stipend for college and a fresh start not as a favour, but because he finally trusted someone who saw the world clearer than he did.

A week later they strolled through HydePark, leaves drifting down like whispers. She turned to him. You could have stayed in your tower. Why did you stay?

He looked at her and answered, Because sometimes the person who saves you doesnt pull you out of danger; they pull you out of yourself.

So, what do you think? Did Poppy make the right call that night, kissing a stranger to save him? Would you risk everything for a complete stranger? Let me know what youd do.
