The little girl appeared by the biker’s table so quietly that he nearly missed her presence until she whispered.

The little girl appeared beside the bikers booth so quietly that, at first, I scarcely realised she was there. Excuse me, sir she breathed, little more than a whisper.

He turned midway through his meal, fork in hand, and spotted a tiny wisp of a girl standing in the dusty glow of the café. Her yellow t-shirt hung like a tent, her cheeks were smudged, and tangled hair framed wide, anxious eyes that flicked again and again towards a young man at the bar.

The bikers tough exterior softened instantly. Are you alright, love?

She drew closer, trembling so fiercely that her words quivered on her lips. He isnt my father, she said, almost silently.

The silence in the café seemed to deepen, pressing around them, as the bikers face turned solemn. Gently, he pulled her into the booth beside him, his heavy arm forming a shield between her and the rest of the room.

Stay behind me, he said quietly.

Across the room, the young man at the bar turned, his eyes cold. The biker rose slowly, the worn leather of his jacket groaning as he stood, chair scraping harshly.

We need a word, he said.

The girl clung to his jacket, then caught sight of the wolf crest stitched into the leather. Her eyes filled with sudden tears.

Mum always said if anything happened if I ever saw that wolf I should come find you.

The bikers breath caught in his throat. His voice dropped to a whisper.

Whats your mums name?

The little girls glance darted again to the man at the bar, then she whispered, Rose.

Something flickered in the bikers eyesa depth of pain resurfacing after years gone by. He looked down at the girl, then back to the man across from them. Where is her mother? he demanded.

The young man gave an insincere shrug. She handed her over to me.

The little girl shook her head furiously, tucking herself further behind the biker and his leather jacket. Hes lying. He took me when Mum screamed.

All of a sudden, every leather-clad figure in the café was on their feet, chairs scraping across the boards. The little bell above the door jingled as two more bikers strode in, blocking the exit in grim silence.

From inside his jacket, the biker produced a battered old photographyoung woman beaming, the same wolf emblem hanging from a chain at her throat.

The girls grubby finger touched the photo. Thats Mum.

Rage glinted in the bikers eyes. The young man took a nervous half-step away. The bikers voice had turned to ice.

Rose is my sister.

The little girl drew close, voice shaking as she whispered, Shes still in his car.Without a word, the biker passed the trembling girl into the arms of the nearest leather-clad woman. He strode to the bar, the others closing in behind, a silent, immovable wall. The young mans bravado crumbled, his mouth working uselessly.

Shes out there? the biker said, voice thunder and steel.

The terrified girl nodded, clinging to the womans hand. Every eye in the café burned with purpose.

The biker stalked outside, the others flanking him. In the dusk-lit parking lot, a battered sedan idled, exhaust curling around the shape of a woman slumped in the passenger seat, hands bound, face streaked with fear and relief at the sight of her brother. In a blade-sharp instant, two men wrenched the door open. He untied his sister, holding her tight as she broke down, sobs wracking her body. The little girl ran to themthe reunion fierce, wordless, curled into their arms.

Back inside, the bikers blocked the young mans exit. He stumbled backwards, desperate, as the pack drew tighter. Sirens wailed in the distancethe woman at the counter already on the phone, voice steady and sure.

Later, as police lights stuttered across the café walls, the biker knelt by his niece, tucking a lock of her tangled hair behind her ear. She held his wolf-emblem patch as if it were a shield.

Youre safe now. With family, he whispered.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, its last threads of light painting gold across the cafés dusty glass, three silhouettesuncle, sister, and childwalked out into the night together. And all around, the gentle, watchful eyes of their newfound pack followed them, making sure, for once, the lone would wander no more.
