He Was Involved in a Terrible Car Accident That Left Both His Legs Badly Injured—And This Is How It All Ended…

He ended up in a terrible car accident, which left both his legs badly injured. And just like that, everything else was finished…

A promising career, with a clear path to Managing Director and a handsome salary. Trips to the Lake District with my wife. Weekends at the pub with friends. All of it, gone…

They pieced his legs back together as best they could and sent him home. What else could anyone do? All that remained was to hope for Gods mercy and a bit of luck. And hope he did, but at night he’d scream in agony. Only the injections twice a day, morning and evening, offered him a few hours of restless sleep.

He was unable to get out of bed for several months, having to use a bedpan. God bless his wife for all she did. And when he finally tried getting up, using a Zimmer frame to walk, the pain returned with ten times the force.

If youve never had injections in your stomachneeded for avoiding blood clots and bedsores when youre confined for so longlet me tell you, ladies and gentlemen, it makes sneezing, coughing, or even visiting the loo a far cry from what it once was. It takes steely nerves.

Not that I had any nerves left, truth be told. I was completely frayed, with no more strength left for enduring pain.

But time went by. Eventually, he learned to walk again, bit by bit. He staggered, tripped, nearly fell with every step, but stillit was progress.

His friends vanishedno calls, no concern. His company quickly filled his role, and the Managing Director position slipped away. When would his misery end, and what would it all lead to? That was the question now.

You can imagine how bleak it all felt. The future looked like a disabled badge parking spot. Thank heavens his wife didnt leave him…

The day he finally ventured outside on crutches with his wife watching over him, the sunlight stung his eyes so fiercely he almost choked on it and tears spilled down his cheeks. He felt utterly worthless, a cripple on crutchesthis was all that was left of his life.

His wife quietly stepped aside to give him a moment alone. He hobbled a few steps, squinting into the sun and getting used to the spring breeze.

Suddenly, he heard an insistent mew from below. By his left crutch sat a little grey kitten.

What do you want? he asked.

Hed never had much to do with animals over the years, and didnt really know how to handle them. The kitten gazed up and mewed again, clearly hungry.

Love, could you fetch a bit of beef for him? he asked his wife.

When she returned, he carefully took the treat from her and bent down to offer it to the kitten, who watched him quietly and then tucked in.

The next day, when they went outsidehim wincing with every stepthree cats were waiting, clearly having been there for some time.

Well, this is something! he chuckled.

For a brief moment, the pain let go. His wife grumbled, but still brought out three more treats. He grimaced, leaned down and fed each one.

On the third day, there were five cats and two small terriers wagging their tails expectantly. His wife moaned out loud, but he insisted she nip to the corner shop for a kilo of sausages, which he divided fair and square between them all.

After their meal, the lot of them scampered round his crutches, as if inviting him to play. He was annoyed and amused in equal measure, but managed to take a few more steps. The terriers yapped with excitement.

Next day, it rained. His wife threatened to confiscate his crutches, but he was determined, shuffling down on his own for the first time in months.

Theyre waiting for me, he explained, How can I not go? I must.

So he went, and his little pack of cats and dogs danced about his feet in the drizzle, and he laughed as he limped around after them. His wife stood with a brolly near the doorway, watching him and smiling…

Time moved on. Before long, he was down to one crutch, and soon, none at all. Who needs crutches when you’ve got four-legged friends to chase? Suddenly, he realised he couldnt remember the last time his legs had really hurt.

Work didnt want him backa limping invalid wasnt much good to them. He was paid a generous severance, and resigned by his own choice. With nothing but time now, he decided to write about everything that happened.

What came out was a full-length play. When he finished, he sent it to all the local theatres, but received nothing but rejectionsexcept one tiny community theatre in a half-subterranean space.

A week later, the director rang and said, We want to put it on. But well need to trim and polish it here and there.

For a month, they slogged over each line, debating passionately. And another month after that, opening night arrived.

There were just fifteen people in the cosy, little theatre, not even half sold, but to him these were the fifteen most important people in his world.

He was a bundle of nerves, dreading to look at their faces. When the final line was spoken and the curtain fell, silence hung heavy in the hallhe felt his soul, his heart, his hope all collapse. It felt like half an hour, but after a few seconds

Thunderous applause rang out! The cast were laughing, bowing, called on for encores.

The second performance was fully sold out. People crowded the aisles and corridors. The applause shook the flimsy curtain.

Soon enough, the company booked the citys larger venue, and theatregoers flocked to discuss the latest play by this rising star.

He bought himself a fine new suit, and always took his wife onstage to bow to the audience. How could he do otherwise?

You might wonder what happened to the pack in the courtyard. Wellhe and his wife took in the two terriers and two of the cats. Devoted fans found homes for the rest.

So what is this story about? Well, perhaps its about nothing. Or perhaps, about how powerful it is to see hopeful eyes at your feetand realise you simply cant fall. You must carry on.
