Max, whats that? Emma asked sharply, holding a shirt in her hands. Whats that pink stain? Lipstick? Oh, so you were held up at work again?

Emma, what are you on about? Max replied wearily as he sorted his work gear. Ive just come off a night shift. Lipstick? The only woman in our department is Nurse Nancy. Honestly Im exhausted.

Emma smoothed the fabric, crumpled the shirt and headed for the shower. Max let out a heavy sigh.

It had been just over six months since Emma and Max started dating, and everything seemed perfect except for one thingEmma was extremely jealous. She found reasons to be suspicious even where none existed.

Look at this, Emma whined, thrusting the shirt toward her sister. Hes definitely cheating. See this?

Lucy, Emmas sister, examined the shirt, sniffed the spot and burst out laughing.

Whats so funny? Emma snapped.

Its just jam, Lucy said.

Emma snatched the shirt from her sister and sniffed it herself. A mix of confusion and disbelief crossed her face.

You need to calm down, Lucy said. I dont get where this paranoia comes from.

Emma sat opposite her sister.

We didnt just start seeing each other, Emma confessed, looking away. I broke him off from his last relationship. He cheated on his ex with me, and I thought hed never leave me. Then I realised he wouldeventually, and badly.

Thats not a reason to bring up infidelity, Lucy warned. Learn to trust.

I do trust him, Emma protested. I just keep worrying about losing him.

Lucy shook her head, speechless.

Where were you? Emma demanded, arms crossed, around one in the morning.

Max sighed wearily.

Emma, you let me go out with the lads. We watched the match, had a few drinks, relaxed. Whats the problem?

Dimitris been home for ages, I called Lisa. Where have you been the past two hours?

Dmitri left early because I promised his wife Id cover his shift, and Sergei and I stayed on. Emma, calm down. Im going to bed.

Max trudged to the bedroom and collapsed onto the bed, trying to forget Emmas chronic jealousy and find some peace, as he used to. But Emma ruined it again, as she always did.

Emma left the supermarket, eyes glued to her phone, oblivious to her surroundings. She turned her head and gasped. Across the street, a blonde woman hung around Maxs neck, laughing, while he pressed her close without a hint of shame.

Emmas vision went black. She flung the grocery bag aside and lunged at Max. Grabbing the womans arm, she shoved her away.

I knew it! Emma shouted. I knew you were cheating! Youre a liar! NonoI was right! Youre a traitor!

Max stared at her, his fists clenched, his gaze shifting accusingly to the bewildered blonde.

Emma

Dont talk to me. I know what youll say. I wont hear any more excuses.

Its my sister, actuallymy halfsister, Max cut in.

What? Emma froze.

Shes Aunt Inas daughter. You know her. And Vicky is my sister; we grew up together. Youd better go home, well talk there.

Emma obeyed, muttering a brief sorry as she left the confused girl behind.

Max returned home late, his lips pressed tight as if theyd vanished, his eyes refusing to meet Emmas.

Max

Ive had enough, he admitted. I cant understand why youre so jealous. Since we started dating, its been accusations left and right. Your eyes are always scanning, suspecting me of flirting with patients, nurses, doctorsanyone. Its crossed the line Im tired.

Max! Emma pleaded. Are you leaving me? Please, I love you! Ill try to change, I swear. Please

Emma fell to her knees, clutching his hands, looking straight into his eyes. Max felt sorry for her; he truly loved her and had even ended a fiveyear relationship for her. He never imagined he could be in this position, but Emma had captured his soul. Now doubt gnawed at him from within.

I love you, he whispered, squeezing her hand. But what youre doing is unhealthy. I cant live like this.

I wont ever do it again, Emma sobbed. Never. Just stay with me. I cant live without you.

Max exhaled and pulled her close. He couldnt leave her, not after everything.

For a few months their relationship seemed fine; Emma kept her jealousy hidden and Max enjoyed her company, even skipping early shifts and staying late at work.

Autumn arrived, bringing a wave of patients. Max was physically drained, barely making it to work, eating dinner at home before collapsing into bed.

Emmas suspicion flared again. At first she tried to trust him, ignoring the faint scent of foreign perfume on his shirt. The staff were mostly older women, so there was little cause for alarm. Yet each day her doubts grew; she watched Max, inspected his shirts, tried to uncover any secret.

One evening, after his shift, Max headed straight for the shower, spending as little time as possible before hitting the bed. He quietly opened the bedroom door and saw Emma scrolling rapidly through his phone.

Emma what are you doing?

She jumped, quickly pushing the phone away.

Just I need to make a call.

Max glanced at the pinkcased phone on the nightstand.

Did you forget yours?

Its dead.

The screen of the phone lit up; a message appeared.

Really? Completely dead? So youre lying too, Max raised an eyebrow. Anything else I should know about you?

Sorry, Emma murmured, lowering her head.

Did you find what you were looking for? Miss? Max snapped, irritated.

Emma shook her head.

Silently, Max walked to the wardrobe and began packing. Emma scrambled off the bed, clutching his arm.

Please, no! I wont do it again. I trust you, Max!

No, Emma. The first time I forgave you, the second I wont step into the same trap. Im fed up. I just want a quiet life, to be trusted and to trust in return. Thats not happening now.

Within half an hour Max had packed everything, leaving a bewildered Emma on the bed, hugging her knees.

I love you, truly. But I cant keep going like this. What about you? You wont change.

Max left the rented flat and went back to his parents house, utterly exhausted.

Mistrust destroys even the strongest bonds. Emma probably feared Max would betray her just as he had with his ex, yet she chose him herself. Without trust there can be no love, no friendship, no partnershipher greatest mistake.

(Feel free to like and share your thoughts below.)Months later, the first snow fell silently over the city, coating the streets in a soft, indifferent hush. Emma stood at the window of the tiny studio shed rented after Max left, watching flakes settle on the cracked pane, each one a reminder that some things could be covered up, but never truly erased.

She had started attending a group for people who struggled with obsessive thoughts. The room smelled of coffee and old books, and a gentle hum of shared stories filled the space. When a woman with a scar across her eyebrow spoke about the way jealousy had cost her a marriage, Emma felt a strange, unexpected kinship. The womans voice trembled, then steadied, and Emma realized that the trembling was not a sign of weakness but of someone who had finally begun to breathe.

Trust isnt something you give and receive in a single moment, the facilitator said, eyes sweeping the circle. Its a practice, a daily choice to let go of the imagined narratives we tell ourselves.

Emmas hands, once clenched around imagined proofs of betrayal, opened. She let the words sink in, feeling the weight of years lift just a fraction. That night, she wrote a letter she never intended to send, scribbling apologies to Max, to herself, to the version of herself that had become a prison.

Across town, Max had moved back into his parents house, but the emptiness of the apartment still lingered in his thoughts. He spent evenings at the same coffee shop where he used to meet Emma, now just a habit, a quiet ritual. One rainy afternoon, a familiar silhouette appeared in the doorwaya woman carrying a battered tote bag, hair slicked back by the wind.

She paused, eyes meeting his for a heartbeat that stretched into an eternity. No accusation, no pleading, just a simple, weary smile.

Hey, she said, voice low, as if testing the air for any lingering bitterness.

Hey, Max replied, surprised by the ease that slipped through his throat.

They sat opposite each other, a steaming mug between them, the clatter of cups and soft music filling the gaps. Emma spoke first, not about the past, but about the present, about how shed learned to look inward instead of outward, to question the stories she fed herself rather than the people around her.

Im not asking for anything, she whispered, just wanted you to know Im working on… on being whole, whatever that looks like.

Max nodded, feeling an unfamiliar peace settle in his chest. He thought of the nights he had spent sleepless, of the weight of suspicion that had pressed on his ribs. He realized that the love he had for Emma had never truly died; it had simply been suffocated by fear and miscommunication.

Thank you, he said, his voice steadier than it had been in months. For letting me know youre okay.

Outside, the snow melted into slushy rivulets, turning the citys coldness into something more fluid, more forgiving. In that modest café, two people who had once stood on opposite edges of a crumbling bridge found a place to step back, to look at the river below, and to recognize that sometimes the most profound love is the one that lets you walk awayfree, unburdened, and hopeful for whatever lies ahead.
