The Father-in-Law Deliberately Tested His Son-in-Law to See If He Was a Worthy Husband for His Daughter

Published

My friends always said that I was terribly unlucky with my wife, though even worse so with her parents.

My wife, Emily, came from a wealthy English family and never denied herself a thing. Shed been sent to one of the best universities and always had everything she wanted. After graduating, she took up a job, but every penny she earned went into her own account, for her own use. Her father admired this fiercely and liked to call it her capital accumulation, yet never missed a chance to scold me for supposedly not bringing enough money into the family.

You need to be the cornerstone that my Emily can stand behind, solid and unwavering. Are you prepared to provide for her if she falls ill? Can you afford to take her on holidays abroad?

Money matters had never really crossed our minds as a couplewe were perfectly content with what we both contributed. But her father seized every opportunity to needle me about it whenever we met. The situation got so uncomfortable that I began to dread every visit to her family home, always inventing pressing reasons to excuse myself from their gatherings.

So, when her fathers birthday was approaching, I was hoping to get out of it too. Emily, however, literally dragged me by the ear to the dining table and made me sit down, grinning at all the friends her father had invited.

Out of the blue, one of the guests asked, What does your son-in-law do for a living, then?

Hes just an ordinary office worker, her father replied with a touch of disdain, brings in a bit of cash, but my Emily really holds the family together…

Id reached my limit with his jibes. His constant put-downs werent just irritatingthey took the wind from my sails.

For one, Im not just an office worker. I lead a planning team and my salary is by no means insignificant. And surely you know that we share the costs of everything? I cant magically become a director overnight and buy Emily fancy houses and flash cars. But if you truly wanted whats best for your daughter, why didnt you help us buy a home?

Her father only chuckled, clearly enjoying my outburst.

Later on, after the cake, candles, and tea were finished, I stepped outside for a smoke and he followed me.

Not bad, he said thoughtfully. Youre starting to come into your own. Not a fool, you know your worth, and you finally stood up for yourself. Theres no need to always be patientotherwise youll never get anywhere.

I realised then that my father-in-law had always tried to push my buttons on purpose, testing how Id react. To him, money mattered less than my ability to protect my boundaries and support the woman I love. After that evening, thanks to standing my ground, I found that Emilys parents started taking me a lot more seriously.
