Id like to tell you about Emily, a lovely woman Ive known since we were kids down in Manchester. She once had a pictureperfect marriage, a good husband and two children little Milly and Poppy. Everything turned upside down the day her husband, Tom, was killed in a road accident on his way home from work. I remember how devastated she was; she told me she thought shed never get past that horror. Her own mother, however, urged her to pull herself together for the sake of the kids, and Emily did just that.

She threw herself into work, and when the children were old enough she decided to earn a living abroad. First she went to Dublin, where she juggled a string of odd jobs before she could earn a decent wage. She sent money home every month, eventually buying the children a modest flat and even having a nice renovation done on her own place. She was proud of what shed achieved.

A year ago, just as she was thinking of moving back to the UK for good, she met a man named Arthur. Hes a fellow Brit whos been living in London for twenty years. They started talking and she felt there might be something real there. But doubts kept nagging at her. Arthur couldnt go back to Ireland, and Emily still longed for home. So she booked a trip back to Manchester, met her children first, then her parents, and finally tried to see her motherinlaw, though she never managed to find the time to sit down with her husbands parents there were simply too many things to sort out.

One afternoon, a friend of hers who works as a shop assistant stopped by and said, Your motherinlaw is absolutely furious with you.
How would she know that? Emily asked.
She was overheard with a neighbour saying youre arrogant and that money has spoiled you. She also thinks youve never helped them financially.

Hearing that was a blow. Emily had raised two kids on her own and had done everything she could for them. She hadnt been in a position to give money to her inlaws, let alone spare a penny for herself.

She felt no longer inclined to visit them, but she forced herself to go, buying groceries and showing up at their house. The conversation started politely, but the memory of that gossip gnawed at her. Finally she said, You have no idea how hard these years have been for me. I did everything for my children because I had no support.

Her motherinlaw replied, Were also left without help. All we have are our children, and were alone almost orphaned. You should come back and help us.

Emily left feeling ashamed, unable to tell them she now had a husband in London. She walked out upset, wondering whether she really ought to support the parents of a man whos no longer alive. Shes at her wits end.
