Mark stood in the doorway, pale as chalk, with a shadowed gaze

**Diary Entry – 12th May**

I stood in the doorway, pale as chalk, my gaze dark and almost threatening. My hands clenched the doorframe, and my shoulders trembled not from cold but from the fury that had taken hold of me.

Whats going on here? My voice, low and heavy, cut through the air.

Emma felt her heart tighten. She loved me, but in that moment, she was afraid. She didnt want to believe the man whod saved her could be forced to choose between her and his own mother.

Margaret lifted her gaze with practised calm, like an actress who knew she held all the control.

Whats happening, my dear, is that Im trying to save your life. Stop and think for a momentwhat are you doing with this girl? In three months, youve spent more on her than you did on yourself all last year.

Mum I closed my eyes briefly, as if trying to rein in my anger. Ive told youEmma isnt some fling. Shes the woman I love.

Love? Margaret let out a cold laugh. Love isnt found next to rubbish bins. She comes from there, Oliver! Do you have any idea what that means for our reputation?

Emmas cheeks burned. She wanted to answer, to shout, but an invisible weight pressed against her chest. Instead of words, her eyes filled with tears.

I took a step forward, closer to my mother.

Do you know where I found her? Yes, near a bin. Do you know why? Not for herselffor an old woman who had nothing to eat. But its easier for you to see the filth than the kindness.

Kindness doesnt pay the bills, Margaret snapped. And lets not forgeta man like you could have any woman he wants.

Thats right, I said firmly. And Ive chosen Emma.

A sharp silence fell between us.

Finally, Emma found her voice.

Oliver, you dont have to

I do, I interrupted gently. She needs to hear the truth.

Margaret crossed her arms like a judge waiting for the defendants final plea.

The truth is simple, Mum. You think love is measured in pedigree and bank accounts. I believe its measured in the moments someone stands by you even when you have nothing.

Emma looked at me, the knot in her throat loosening.

When I met her, I continued, she couldve refused me. She tried. She knew it was dangerous to accept help from a stranger. But she didbecause she was exhausted and starving. And since then, Ive never seen her ask for a single thing for herself.

Margaret bit her lip but stayed silent.

I took another step.

If you cant accept my choice, Im sorrybut this is my life. And shes part of it.

Emma flinched. She could hardly believe what she was hearing.

Oliver Her voice was a mix of gratitude and fear.

No, Emma, I said firmly. Ive stayed quiet too long. Ive been torn between what my mother wants and what I want. Now Im choosing. And I choose you.

Margaret rolled her eyes, but my tone left no room for argument.

Fine, she said at last, rising from her chair. But dont come to me when she leaves you with nothing.

And with that, she walked out, leaving behind a faint trace of expensive perfume and a heavy emptiness in the air.

Emma stood frozen, unable to move.

You did that for me? she whispered.

Not just for you. For us. And because I refuse to live knowing I lost someone like you over someone elses pride.

Tears streamed down her face, but for the first time in ages, they were tears of relief.

I pulled her close, holding her against my chest.

Well make it, I murmured. It might not be easy, but well make it.

And if your mother never forgives us? she asked quietly.

Then well live with that. Ive made my choice.

In the days that followed, the house felt quietercolderwithout Margarets constant presence. Emma noticed the suspicious glances from the neighbours, but every time I smiled at her, she remembered she wasnt alone.

We started looking for a smaller flat, just for the two of us. I reorganised my business affairs, and Emma found part-time work at a nearby café. Our life no longer had the luxury of my mothers home, but it had something elsefreedom and mutual respect.

One spring evening, as we walked home, I stopped and took her hand.

I made you a promise the first day we metremember?

That youd stay beside me, no matter what, Emma smiled.

And I have. And I always will.

We kissed under the lamplight, and for Emma, the world narrowed to that single moment. She knew the road ahead wouldnt be without obstacles, but she was ready to walk itbecause she was no longer the girl by the bins. She was the woman a man had chosen to love, no matter the cost.

**Lesson learned:** Love isnt about where someone comes from, but where they stand beside you. Pride and reputation fadebut loyalty? That lasts.
