Father Noticed a Bruise Under His Daughter’s Eye and Made a Call—His Son-in-Law’s Life Was Ruined.

on

Marina stands in the doorway, greeting her parents with her usual friendly smile. Only a dark, shining bruise under her eye betrays the subject she doesnt want to discuss.

Mum, its nothing, dont worry about it, she says quickly, noticing her mothers sharp glance.

Eleanor sighs deeply. Its your life, love. You have to live it

Her father doesnt even acknowledge his son-in-law. He slowly walks to the window and stares blankly outside, as if he hasnt heard his daughter mumbling something about a wardrobe and the dark.

I just tripped last night, thats all. Come on, Mum, everythings fine with me and Edward!

Fine? Marina remembers exactly what happened yesterday. Edward, always angry, hadnt just shouted at her. When she dared to say shed had enough, he grabbed her dressing gown so hard it tore at the chest.

What, you stupid cow, dont you remember who kept you alive when you were running off to that Daniel?! hed yelled, shaking her. Who carried you home when you were too drunk to walk? Who loved you, you ungrateful little

Then a hard punch. Like a man would throw. Stars danced in her vision before the pain swallowed her whole while Edward kept screaming obscenities.

Yes, love. Wardrobe dark, her mother murmurs, though she knows exactly what happened.

And she feels guilty. She was the one who pushed Marina into marrying Edward! She was the one who chased Daniel away, convinced he was a bad influence.

That wardrobe of yours, love, must have fists, Eleanor says pointedly, glaring at her son-in-law.

William never turns from the window. He steps onto the balcony to smoke. Unlike his wife, hes never supported Edward. The man was always hollow. Rich family, flat in London, car, connections. But rotten inside.

Now the rot showsa bruise under his daughters eye.

William couldve grabbed Edward by the collar and given him a proper thrashing. But that would only cause a scene. So he steps outside instead.

He knows how to handle this. And he already has a plan.

Hes spent a long time on the phone out here.

Meanwhile, Marina buys her mother a coffee, and they chat about nothing. Half an hour later, her parents leave.

Edward, expecting shouting and drama, finally relaxes. He slouches back on the sofa, cracks open a lager, and even smirks. To him, their silence means approval. Family sticks together, bruises happen. No one steps out of line. Easy!

See, Marina? Told you itd blow over, he drawls, smug. Your parents are decent, sensible people. Unlike you Yesterday, you had a go at me! So what if I had a drink? Its my life.

He takes a swig and reaches for crisps.

His relief doesnt last.

Not even half an hour later, someone knocks on the door. Not ringsknocks. Firm. Confident. The sound makes Edward freeze mid-sip.

He checks the peephole and pales.

Daniel stands there. His rival. Marinas ex. The one who nearly married her but let her go. Tall, handsome, confident. Wearing an expensive coat, with that same smirk that makes women weak and men want to punch him.

What do you want? Edward growls, barely opening the door.

Step aside, Daniel says calmly, shouldering past him.

Edward stumbles back like a ragdoll.

Marina jumps up from the sofa, eyes wide.

Daniel

Pack a bag, he says briskly. We can go to mine, or your parents. But you dont need this washed-up loser.

Who the hell are you calling a loser? Edward sputters but stays rooted to the corner.

He has his reasons to fear Daniel.

I called you, Eddie. Personally, Daniel smiles. Didnt want to interfere. But when Marinas dada proper bloke, by the wayrang me saying youd hit her? Game over.

W-what are you on about?! Edward croaks.

Well, not *completely* over, Daniel chuckles. The space you rent for your club? Belongs to a mate of mine. A very good mate. Youll be getting an eviction notice. Already sent to your office.

Edward sinks into a chair like a deflated balloon.

Plus, I tallied up six months of unpaid rent. You rememberyour lease said the rate goes up if the club turns a profit? It did. Six months ago. The notices been sitting on your desk. You just never read it. Me and my mate waited, let the debt pile up. Late fees, interest You get it? Now youre officially in the red. Want me to name the figure?

Daniel leans in.

And I know you havent got a penny to pay it. Too busy drinking with your floozy mates.

Edward slumps like a wrung-out dishrag.

Th-this is a setup! he stammers. You planted those papers!

Think what you want, Daniel shrugs. Take me to court. But your solicitor quit. Or did you sack him? Wholl defend you now? Your bartender with the nose ring?

Edward opens and closes his mouth like a fish.

Marina, lets go. Dont bother with your things. Ill buy you whatever you need. The rubbish here isnt worth keeping.

Daniel, wait, Marina says, stunned. This is all so fast. I dont understand

Fast is when you get punched and still make excuses for the man who did it. Everything else is too slow.

Daniel holds out his hand. She takes it.

You lot are mad! Edward roars. This is my house! My wife!

Wife? Daniel scoffs. Youre the husband who hits her, then hides behind a lager and telly? Youre not even a man, Eddie. Just a loud, bitter little nothing. Cant even throw a proper punch.

II Edward splutters.

Whats your move? Take me to court? Explain how her bruise came from a wardrobe? Or how your club failed because youd rather drink than work?

Marina follows Daniel without looking back. Only at the door does she pause.

Im sorry, Edward. Goodbye.

Piss off, then! he snarls. Go on

And they leave.

Two days later, Edward sits in an empty flat. His club is shut. Papers pile on the tableeviction notices, debt warnings.

Daniel wasnt just an ex. He was an ex with patience, power, and perfect timing.

Meanwhile, peace settles in Marinas parents home. Her mother cooks, her father reads the paper.

Marina walks in.

Hi, she says.

Whereve you been, love? Edward looking for you? her father asks sternly.

I was with Daniel.

So you left Edward?

Yes.

Her mother clasps her hands. Her father just nods.

Good. Thats my girl. And listen, he grins, if that waste of space comes near you again, Ill knock his teeth in.

Dad did you call Daniel? Marina asks.

Course I did. Who else? He winks. Hes a proper bloke. Unlike the other one.

Thank God you left that idiot! her mother bursts out. Forgive me, love, I nearly ruined your life. At least you didnt have kids with him

Oh, Mum, listen to you! her father laughs. But the main thing is she knows now. She was wrong.

Outside, Daniel leans against his black Range Rover. He smilesknowing, certain. No one will ever hurt Marina again.

Well, maybe with love. And happy surprises. But thats another story.
