Waking in the dead of night, Larissa felt an emptiness beside her. Bewildered, she reached out, hoping to feel the familiar warmth of her husband, Stephen.
Waking in the middle of the night, Emily felt an emptiness beside her. Confused, she reached out, expecting the familiar warmth of her husband, Jeremy.
But sleep didnt return, and Jeremywell, he seemed in no hurry to come back to bed, even after fifteen minutes. Emilys heart pounded anxiously as she sat up, squinting into the dark room. What if something had happened? What if he was ill?
She tried to calm herself, reasoning that perhaps Jeremy had simply woken from a bout of insomnia and decided to tackle some work emails. Still, unease clung to her.
Not one to fret without cause, Emily slipped quietly out of bed and tiptoed toward the kitchen, pausing just a few steps short when she heard Jeremys voice. He was on the phoneand the speaker was loud enough for her to catch every word. Or rather, every word from the other end.
*”Yes, darling, Ive already booked the tickets to Spain,”* Jeremys voice oozed anticipation. *”Well have an unforgettable time together. No one will ever know.”*
Emily felt the ground drop beneath her. Her world shattered in an instant. Each word struck like a knifesharp, cruel, and deliberate.
All those years together, all the plans, the joys, the hardships theyd faced side by side. How could he?
She crept back to the bedroom, tears streaming down her cheeks as she stared into the dark. Her heart ached with a storm of anger, hurt, and bitter disappointment.
Finally, resolve settled over her. She stood, marched to the wardrobe, and began stuffing Jeremys things into a suitcase.
When he finally slunk back into the bedroom, he froze at the sight of her with the luggage. *”Whats going on?”* he asked, baffled.
Emily looked up, her eyes cold and steady. *”I packed your suitcase,”* she said calmly. *”So you can take it with you to Spain.”*
*”What are you on about?”* Jeremy gave a nervous laugh.
*”Dont play dumb,”* Emily snapped. *”I heard your phone call in the kitchen.”*
Jeremy paled, hands trembling as he fumbled for words. She cut him off. *”You can pack the rest yourself. Take this, go to a hotel, or wherever you like. And after your little* holiday, *dont bother coming back.”*
That night, Emilys life changed forever.
As Jeremy left, she lay back down, knowing sleep wouldnt come. But one thought kept circling her mind: *Everything will be different now.* No more illusions, no more pain from betrayal. She was finally free.
