Emma discovered she was pregnant. Her husband, George, stayed by her side throughout the pregnancy, indulging her every whim and desire. Finally, the moment arrived, and George drove Emma to the maternity hospital. When a healthy baby girl was born, he sighed with relief. Overjoyed and exhausted, the new father went home to rest. The next day, he returned to visit his wife and daughter.

“Theres no one by that name here,” the nurse suddenly told him.

“That cant be!” George refused to believe it. “Maybe she stepped out? Please look for her!”

“No, shes gone. Heres a note,” the nurse replied, handing him a folded piece of paper. George unfolded it and paled as he read the words.

George, the sales manager, had never been married before. When young, beautiful Emma joined his department, he fell for her instantly. On her first day, he approached her with a warm smile.

“Good morning, colleague,” he said.

“Good morning,” she replied softly, returning the smile.

“Oscar will show you the ropeshes the senior here. Best of luck, I hope well work well together.”

The team, mostly women, exchanged curious glances after he left. Oscar whispered to Vera,

“Since when does George take such an interest in new hires?” They both laughed.

Emma kept to herself at first, observing her new colleagues. She was only twenty-two but had already broken up several marriageseven in college, shed had an affair with a much older professor until rumours forced him to end it.

Over time, George invited her for coffee after work.

“Why not? Youre my bossgood relations are important,” she said with a sweet, disarming smile.

He thought she was joking but was thrilled when she agreed. At thirty, George had never married, though hed had relationships. Things moved quicklyhe fell hard, and soon they were dating. Colleagues were stunned when he announced their engagement.

George fulfilled Emmas every demand without question. He even accepted her condition:

“No children for now. I want to live for myself. When Im ready to be a mother, Ill tell you. Until then, no baby clothes or nappies.”

He assumed shed change her mind. But time passed, and Emma refused to entertain the idea. Whenever he brought it up, she shut him down.

“I warned you from the start. Dont pester me about it.”

One day, George found her upset, clutching a positive pregnancy test.

“Emma youre pregnant?”

She nodded. He swept her into his arms, elatedbut she burst into tears.

“I dont want this. I dont want to get fat. Do something!”

He kissed her tear-streaked cheeks. “Dont cry, darling. This is happiness. I love you. Were having a baby!”

But Emma was determined. She booked an appointment to terminate the pregnancy. George rushed to the hospital just in time, pulling her away before she entered the clinic.

“Please, Emma! Dont do this. Let our baby live. Ill help with everythingI promise!”

Reluctantly, she agreedon the condition that hed handle all nappy changes and nighttime feedings. True to his word, George doted on her throughout the pregnancy. When labour began, he drove her to the hospital. Only after their healthy daughter arrived did he finally exhale in relief.

Exhausted but happy, he went home to rest. Returning the next day, he was met with shocking news.

“Your wife isnt here. Shes goneleft the baby behind.”

“Thats impossible!” George insisted. “Maybe she just stepped out?”

“No. She left. Heres a note.” The nurse handed him a folded paper.

George unfolded it and turned pale. Three words: “Dont look for me.”

Emma vanishedno calls, no trace. Shed even changed her number. A month later, she finally called.

“Pack my things. My friend Arthur will collect them. File for divorce yourselfI wont show up.”

Their daughter, Alice, wasnt even mentioned. She didnt want the childor George. So he became both father and mother to Alice, with only his mum nearby to help.

Meanwhile, Sophies phone rang. It was Daniels teacher, Mrs. Harris.

“Come to the school immediately. Your son has caused trouble!”

Sophie rushed over, bewildered. Daniel was a quiet, well-behaved boywhat could he have done?

At school, she found Daniel sitting outside the headteachers office with a red mark on his cheek. Across from him sat Alice, his classmatea top studentand her father.

“Daniel pushed Alice,” Mrs. Harris explained.

“Mum, she started it!” Daniel protested. “She called me names and pinched me!”

Alice looked down. “Dad, I didnt mean it.”

George sighed. “Alice, apologise.”

“Daniel, you should too,” Sophie added.

The children mumbled apologies, still glaring. Mrs. Harris sighed. “Perhaps you can sort this out yourselves?”

George and Sophie exchanged glances, then laughed.

“Im George, Alices father.”

“Sophie, Daniels mum.”

The children eventually made up, and George suggested pizza to celebrate. Over lunch, Daniel whispered to Alice, “If anyone bothers you, tell me.”

Alice grinned.

George and Sophie, meanwhile, found themselves drawn to each other. Their childrens fight had brought them together, and soon they were datingcinema trips, park walks, family dinners.

Months later, Sophie was pregnant again. Daniel and Alice excitedly picked a name for their baby brother: Benjamin.

Sometimes, happiness comes from the unlikeliest beginnings.
