My Son-in-Law Threatened to Cut Me Off from My Daughter Unless I Sell My Mother’s House

**Diary Entry**

Half my life, Ive lived alone. Not that I didnt marryJohn left me a year after the wedding, just when our daughter Emily was born. At least he had the decency to leave us the three-bedroom flat. I never planned to marry again. I wasnt truly alone, thoughEmily kept me busy. Raising her was more than enough trouble.

I knew Id done my best, but a fathers presence was something I couldnt replace. Over time, Emily grew clingy with every lad she fancied. Not all of them appreciated it. Too often, I soothed her broken heart. But God is goodeventually, she met Daniel.

He was steady, kind. I was glad when they married. He respected me, respected Emilywhat more could I want? I thought him the perfect son-in-law. But fairy tales dont last. Six months in, Daniel changed.

Meanwhile, I cared for my own mother. Shed had me young, just as Id had Emily, so she lived to see her granddaughter. But age caught up with her. When she fell ill, I brought her home. No choice, really. Yet Daniel despised the arrangement.

Why, Ill never know. He wasnt tending to herthat burden was mine alone. Mum wasnt difficult, eithersharp as a tack. Still, it rankled him.

Things worsened. Soon, Emily sided with him. They avoided me, retreating to their room. Once, wed shared meals; now, silence. I tried talking to hernothing. Just excuses.

No grandchildren, either. “Were living for ourselves,” they said. I pressed at first, then stopped. Their life, their choice. But Daniel grew intolerableacting like lord of my home, though hed never lifted a finger to fix a thing. Always out with mates, clubbing. Where was the decent man Id known?

Perhaps this was his true self.

By New Years, he refused to celebrate with us. He dragged Emily awayjust the two of them. At midnight, she wished us happy new year. He didnt bother.

Next day, he announced, “Were selling your mothers house to buy our own flat.” I was speechless. Hadnt they lived here six months? On my dime? Wasnt that enough?

“No,” I said. “Earn your own flat. Thats Mums house. Were not sellingits hers to decide.”

Daniel stormed out, packed their things, and took Emily to his parents.

It stung that she didnt protest. But her life, her choice. If she thinks this is better, so be it.

**Lesson learned:** Some people show their true colours too late. Stand firmfamily isnt about what they take, but what they give.
