‘You’re Silent, So You Must Be Planning a Divorce Too’: How One Deed Nearly Tore a Family Apart

Published

on

The silence between them was deafening. Youre not saying anythingso youre planning an exit too, Emily whispered, her voice trembling.

James and Emily were finishing dinner when the front door burst open. His mother, Margaret Whitmore, stormed in, her face flushed with fury.

James! You need to hear the truth about your wife! she spat, barely past the threshold.

Mum, sit down. Youre red as a beetyour blood pressure will spike, James said, rising from his chair.

And whose fault is that? Margaret snapped, whirling toward Emily. I ran into Olivia from your office today. She told me everything.

Emily met her gaze, unflinching. And what exactly is everything?

That you were promoted a year agothat youre earning twice what James makes! And he didnt even know! You kept it from him! Margarets chest heaved with indignation.

Whats the issue? Weve never asked you for money. Were fine.

Last spring, when I asked for help with the cottage repairs, you claimed you were skint. Now we find out youve got stacks tucked away! What are you saving for, eh? Planning your escape?

Emily stood abruptly. James, fetch the green folder from the nightstand.

He returned in silence, flipping it open. Savings accounts?

For Oliver and Sophie. Ive been putting aside part of my salary every monthfor their future. When I realised your family would never truly see me as one of your own, I had to think of the children.

What do you mean, not one of us? James cut in.

You forgot already? The flat we bought with the money from selling the Chelsea apartmentonly your name was on the deed. In case things go south. You didnt say a word. I was pregnant, James. And you stayed silent. You think I didnt notice?

James exhaled sharply. Margaret tried to interject: It was just insurance!

From who? The mother of your children? Emilys voice cracked. And then you wonder why Ive been distant?

Wheres the money, Emily? Margaret pressed. If its not for the family, youre stashing it for a way out!

James, please take your mother home. Theres nothing left to say.

Gladly! Margaret hissed, turning on her heel. But at the door, she threw one last jab: Though reallyyou were never right for each other.

When the door clicked shut, the room was thick with silence.

Did you really think I was planning an exit? James finally asked.

I didnt know. You never spoke. Silence is an answer too.

I dont want a divorce. I love you. And the kids.

Then prove it. Show me Im not just temporary.

Fine. Ill transfer the flat to Sophies name. And Ill start putting money aside for thembit by bit, but consistently. Trust goes both ways.

Emily gave a slow nod.

And we dont say the word divorce again, James added.

Agreed.

For the first time in years, they didnt feel like strangers sharing a house, but like a familybound not by money, but by honesty. Silence breaks. Truth holds.
