The Pensioner Told Me She Hasn’t Seen Her Son in Over Six Years – “When Was the Last Time Your Son Spoke to You?” I Asked My Neighbour… And In That Moment, My Heart Broke

“How long has it been since your son last spoke to you?” I asked my neighbour, and I felt a heaviness in my chest as I waited for her answer.

She paused for a moment, her eyes distant. “Its been over six years since I last saw him,” she said quietly. “When he and his wife moved away, at first hed ring me from time to time, but then… the calls just stopped. One year, for his birthday, I bought a cake and went round to visit…” Her voice trembled as she looked away, a tear tracing her cheek.

“And what happened then?”

“My daughter-in-law answered the door. She told me straight away that I wasn’t welcome in their home. My son just looked at me, almost as if Id done something wrong. He didnt say a word, just looked down. That was the last time Ive seen him.”

“He never called you again after that?” I couldn’t hide the disbelief in my voice.

“I rang him once, when Id decided to sell the three-bedroom flat and buy a smaller place. Of course, I gave him some money. He came by, signed the papers, took the money and… that was the end of it. Not a word since.”

“Do you feel terribly lonely, or have you gotten used to being on your own?” I asked gently, watching her delicate hands trembling in her lap.

She drew a breath and straightened her shoulders. “I manage. When I was much younger, my husband left me for another woman. I raised my boy single-handedly, gave him all my love and care. Eventually, he told me he wanted his own place. At first, I was pleased. I thought it marked his coming of age, the start of a new chapter.”

“But it was really her ideahis girlfriends. She insisted they needed their own flat so that no one would meddle in their affairs. And then she became pregnant.”

“And you can simply say all this so calmly? Doesnt it upset you, being left alone at your age? I asked, disbelief colouring my words.

She managed a small, sad smile. “Ive made my peace with it. I quite enjoy my new home now. I have enough money for everything I need. Each morning I wake up, put the kettle on, and step out onto the balcony with my tea. I like watching the city come to life. When I was younger, I used to dream of sleeping inback then I worked two shifts. Id hoped to grow old surrounded by loved ones, but… perhaps solitude was my lot.”

Why not get a pet? Life is cheerier when you have company.

She looked at me, her eyes full of quiet sorrow. “My dear, even cats have been known to wander off. As for a dog, I just don’t know if Ill wake up tomorrow, and I couldnt bear to leave one behind without anyone to care for it. I cant bring someone into my life if I cant promise to look after them. Ive done enough foolish things, once was plenty…”

She tried to keep her composure, but then at last, her resolve broke, and she sobbed softly, shoulders shaking.

Never forsake your parents. Youre a part of themand when theyre gone, a piece of you goes with them.
