“What Do You Mean You Won’t Change Your Name?!” My Mother-in-Law Yelled at the Registry Office

Published

on

What do you mean you dont want to change your surname? my mother-in-law shouted across the registry office.

Emily never really wanted to get married. But at nineteen, she found herself expecting a baby with her schoolmate, a lad shed been seeing three years already. She felt she had no choice she didnt want her child growing up without a father.

Though Tom was a few years older than Emily, he was terribly immature and hopelessly tied to his mothers apron strings. To his credit, though, he didnt run from responsibility he said hed marry her and raise the child. So, wedding arrangements began.

Emily would have been happy just to quietly get married and get on with their lives, but her family insisted on a big do. She really couldnt make sense of spending a small fortune on other people, when that money could go towards essentials for the baby. But nobody paid her the slightest mind. Her mother-in-law and her own sister picked the venue, the guest list, and even the wedding gown.

When she was sent off to try on the dress, Emily dug her heels in. She pictured it all frills and sequins, completely over-the-top and nothing like her style. Her sister and future mother-in-law were hardly known for their taste. When the family heard her objections, they accused her of being ungrateful and made a proper scene. Emily didnt let it bother her she had enough on her plate with A-levels, exams, and getting ready for the babys arrival.

She turned up at the registry office in a simple white dress nothing fancy, but it suited her perfectly. Thats where the real drama began.

Her soon-to-be in-laws had no idea Emily planned to keep her own surname. Tom knew and hadnt made a fuss. But his mother was having none of it. She flew off the handle and shouted so the whole room could hear:
How can you not want to take his name?

Emily just smiled and stepped aside. She knew she had the village reception the next day, surrounded by all his relatives, so itd do no good getting worked up. She chose to save her nerves. The marriage itself barely lasted a few years. Tom turned out to be a useless husband and a hopeless father. Every weekend, hed sit glued to his computer, ignoring the lot of them. When Emilys patience finally ran dry, she packed her things and left.

Her mother-in-law was furious about the turn of events. But for Emily, it was pure relief at last, she felt free and happy.

If Ive learned anything from Emilys story, its that sometimes standing your ground and following your own path is worth all the drama and happiness is found in being true to yourself.
