You’re the Big Brother, So You Have to Help Your Little Sister: You Own Two Flats, So Give One to Your Sister!

Published

on

Youre the eldest brother, so youre expected to help your younger sister. Youve got two flats give one of them to your sister!

Just recently, we celebrated my sister-in-laws birthday. Emily has never liked me, and to be honest, the feelings mutual. The whole family came round for the party from grandparents and nieces to the birthday girl herself. Each relative felt obliged to congratulate my husband because his sister was another year older, and at the same time, they all seemed to praise his generosity.

My husband and I accepted their well-wishes, but couldnt quite figure out what was going on. We were holding a card with £100 in it a decent present for this sort of occasion, but hardly something youd call especially generous. It all became clear as my mother-in-law began to address the birthday girl.

John, its your sisters birthday shes still single without a fellow, so you need to take care of her and make sure shes secure. Now that you own two flats, its only right you give one to Emily.

Everyone started clapping, and I nearly fell off my chair at the sheer audacity. But apparently, things werent going to end there.

Brother, youll give me the one in the new building! When can I move in? Emily chimed in, so I decided it was time to put things straight.

My husband and I do have two flats. One was left to me by my nan weve touched it up a bit and we rent it out. The money we make from letting the place goes towards paying off our mortgage on the flat in the new block, where we actually live. My husband has no claim to my inherited flat, and Ive always planned for it to go to our child. Giving it to my sister-in-law was completely out of the question.

Forget it. The flat we rent out is mine, and the one youre dreaming about is where we live.

My dear, youre very much mistaken as my sons wife, all your assets are joint, and your husband should manage them, my mother-in-law insisted.

I dont mind if you want to help, but not with my property! I fired back. John, do you have anything to say?

Darling, one day you and I will earn more and buy another flat, and then we can give this one to Emily its her birthday after all.

I stared at him. Are you serious? If it comes to that, the only way your sister gets any part of our flat is after I file for divorce!

How can you talk to your husband like that? If you want a divorce, youll have it! my mother-in-law screeched. Son, I think you should pack up and move back home. As for you, youre cruel and greedy! she snapped at me.

After hearing that, I walked out of that mad house theres no way Im sticking around people who think they have the right to tell me what to do with my own property.
