Abigail arrived at the train station from her village, hauling two heavy bags behind her. Though she didnt visit her family very often, she had spent her last pounds on gifts, hoping to bring some happiness into their lives. She never came empty-handed, but this time shed really gone the extra mileeach bag weighed nearly ten kilograms. Despite the exhausting journey, she hadnt hesitated, comforted by the promise that her son would be there to meet her. But when she finally arrived, there was no sign of him anywhere. With no other option, she put down her heavy bags and gave him a call.
The phone rang and rang; at last, after the tenth ring, her son’s voice answered, sounding confused.
Oh, Mum, Im so sorry. I completely forgot you were coming today. We decided to visit my wifes parents in the next county and well be gone all week. Looks like youve come for nothing. Please, just go back. Honestly, we didnt expect this, so I forgot to warn you we just left on the spur of the moment.
Tears welled in her eyes, but she simply replied, Alright.
She handed the two parcels to some homeless people at the station, knowing it would be too much to lug them all the way home, her arms already aching from the strain. She didnt say a word of reproach to her son, who never realised just how deeply hed wounded his mothers heart. She had poured all her love and energy into raising him, and yet, now she was old, he couldnt even be bothered to visit. A month later, when her daughter-in-law rang and asked if she could look after the grandchildren for the weekend so they could go to a friends wedding, Abigail refused. She was tired of only being remembered when she was needed.
