Why Won’t You Let Us Live With You? I’m About to Have a Baby, and You Still Live Alone.

I spent half of my childhood with my twin sister in childrens homes, until our auntmy mums sisterturned eighteen and took us in. She and, later, her husband became our true parents, and I love them dearly. Ill always be grateful for everything theyve done for us.
On our eighteenth birthday, they brought us to a three-bedroom flat in the heart of London, which had once belonged to our parents. Theyd been renting it out all these years, but now they suggested we sell it and split the money so that we could each buy a place of our own. We thought it was a brilliant idea. The flat fetched a very good price, and I had enough for a nice two-bedroom placeof course, I had to take out a mortgage, but I managed to pay it off within a year. After that, I started renovating and furnishing my home exactly how I wanted.
Our parents were relieved to see me settled, but they worried over my sister and kept trying to give her advice about life. She didnt seem keen on finding her own place, instead spending her share on expensive gadgets, posh dinners out, and trips abroad.
Eventually, Auntie lost patience and told her shed have to move out if she didnt buy a flat before she spent all her money. In the end, there wasnt enough left for her to buy anywhere, so she started renting instead.
By this time, she had a boyfriend and they decided to live together, putting aside money for the future. I was pleased that she was finally sorting herself out. As for me, I received a promotion at work, supported our parents, went on holiday, and met a wonderful man I was planning to move in with.
Not long after our relationship began, we all gathered at my place. My sister announced excitedly that she was expecting a baby, then she launched into a long speech about how difficult it would be to keep renting, particularly with rent being higher than most peoples wages these days. I couldnt quite see the point of this speech, until she turned to me.
Why dont you let me have your place? my sister asked. Im about to have a baby, and youre just living here alone. Why not move in with Auntieshe has a spare room anyway?
I said no. My sister burst into tears, grabbed her husbands hand, and left.
She rang me several times after, hoping Id change my mind, but I stayed firm. Id worked hard to pay off the mortgage, put in so much effort to renovate, bought everything myselfwhy should I just hand it all over?
Ultimately, she only had herself to blame for not thinking ahead. We all make our own choices in life, and we must live with the consequences. Sometimes, tough love is the kindest thing of all.
