Mother-in-law Couldn’t Wait for Granddad to Pass Away—She Was Hoping to Get the House

Published

on

For ten long years, I cared for my husbands grandfather. We all lived togetherthe children, the old man, and mein a small, rented flat in Leeds. My husbands sister, Emily, was settled comfortably in the grandfathers flat, acting as if it were hers by right. No one wanted to be burdened with himnot my mother-in-law, nor the other grandchildren.
My own life had never quite found its footing. I dropped out of university, fell pregnant young, and never made the career Id once dreamed of.
Each day was a monotony of obligation, balancing the endless needs of both my children and the frail old man.
My husband detested the constant tension at home. He would disappear for days, escaping the pressure, but none of the other women were interested in a man with children and no home of his own. So, inevitably, he always returned.
I forgave him, even though any love Id had for him had long vanished. My only reason was to ensure there was money for our children and for his grandfather. Emily rarely visited. When she did, it was only to beg her grandfather for his pension or to complain about her finances. Though truly, her situation was hardly direrent-free, she could even afford the odd holiday to Spain.
Five years ago, the grandfather changed his will to leave his flat to me:
Youve become dearer to me than all my kin put together, he told me, voice fragile but firm. My grandson is weak; hell just hand the flat over to his mother or sister. Let your childrenmy great-grandchildrenlive here. I want it to be your reward. I hope you never curse me for the hardship youve borne on my account.
No one else in the family knew. Once his health took a turn for the worse, though, his daughter and Emily started visiting regularly, laying on the concern thick. The old man wasnt naïve. He saw right through them.
When he passed away, talks of inheritance began immediately. My mother-in-law and Emily quickly persuaded my husband to give up his claim to the flat since Emily was already living there. He agreed, still oblivious to the old mans will.
The next day, my husband began packing his things. He coldly informed me that there was another woman, and that the only reason hed stayed so long was to have me care for his grandfather. He left, and it felt as though a great weight had finally been lifted from my shoulders.
But when the family learned about the will, all hell broke loose. They came at me with threats and accusations.
You think youre getting that flat? Over my dead body! I dont know how you managed to care for Grandad or trick him into giving you the flat, but youll never have it. Youre a cheat, and well prove it in court!
Something inside me snapped. You know what I realised? Ive no reason to put up with this anymore. You can take your threats and leave. This is my home now.
Their words meant nothing anymore. Id found a job. My children and I finally had a place of our own, and best of all, I was finished with that family for good.
What would you have done in my place?
