Emilys parents gave us a truly generous wedding gifta flat! They invited us over, handed us the keys, and told us wed own it, but since it was in a newly built block, theyd bought it straight from the developer, unfinished. My mother-in-law then said that, seeing as theyd given us a home, my own parents should help out with the refurbishment. My parents had already given us a hefty sum of money before, but they also agreed to help with the renovation.
We decided to get to work on the place straight after the wedding. Since my dad works in construction, he took care of the purchases, and I pitched in with the labour. Emily would help out when she could, too.
Sometimes, even my father-in-law lent a hand. We chose not to rent a place of our own while the works were going on, to save some money, so we stayed with Emilys parents.
One day, while searching for some paperwork, my eyes landed on the flats documents. Something about them caught my attention, and it left me rather unsettled: my mother-in-law was listed as the owner!
That evening, my dad and I were meant to go out and buy supplies for the bathroom, but I asked if we could put it off until the next day. I told him what I had discovered and said I wanted to talk about what it all meant.
Why is your mum the legal owner of our flat? Why isnt it Emily? I asked bluntly, when everyone was in for the night.
Oh, dont be so naïve! my mother-in-law retorted. Its only to avoid upsetting our dear Emily.
What do you mean?
Well, if you two end up splitting up, you might try to walk away with half our flat!
Our flat? I said. Is it really right for my dad and me to be doing all these renovations thatll cost as much as half the home? And why are you so certain wed ever get divorced? Weve only just got married, for goodness sake!
Mum, I told you, please transfer the flat to my name, Emily mumbled.
So you knew about this all along? I asked her.
No, you dont understand I did know, but I told Mum it should be in my name!
Oh, Emily, what a brilliant way to start our married lifeon a lie!
Its been a few days since I moved back to my parents place. Im not sure what to do now. Emily keeps trying to talk, but I need time to think. I never imagined such duplicity from her familythough perhaps all parents think theyre only looking out for their children.
What should I do in a situation like this? Maybe the lesson is that trust and honesty matter far more than bricks and mortarwithout them, even the finest gift can become a burden.
